e-Electric Motors & Controllers > Kontronik ESC question...

Hi All.....I have a Kontronik Beat ESC in my Vario Silence, I am using a JR 8103 radio. I have the ESC plugged into the throttle channel, I have my normal curve set up from 0-85%, idle up 1 is set at 85% straight across all points. My thinking is to use normal mode to spool up, then switch to idle up 1 to fly. The instructions say to use a switch that can be programed to a set value, and just turn this switch on or off. My question is, what do you guys do, would my method work, or would I be not getting full rpm capability due to the ESC "learning"a slower rate on spool up?.......Thanks, Coop

Hehe, me again

Your method *could* work, the only flaw might be that you also have pitch input when you have the ESC on the throttle/pitch stick.

Ok, the nitro and gas fliers usually have that, too.

But I prefer a separate channel (proportional, not switch) to control the ESC so I can keep pitch all the way down whilst spooling up.

The BEAT does it very slowly though, so the Silence probably won't jump at you even if you used a switch in general or if you switch to idle-up.

85 % sounds a bit high to me for a starter, my Silence hovers and slow FFs well at 50 to 60 % and gets quite responsive at 70 to 85 % (4.6 to 4.7 kg rtf weight).

Concerning the "learning", the ESC learns the way of the throttle stick when programmed to mode 4 (heli-mode), so my guess would be to program it with 100 % of servo travel, then set the curve(s) back to 85 %. Otherwise it might take those 85 for 100 %. I've not tried that one yet...

Hope you get it airborne. Mine is grounded due to a possible failure in the ESC (code 6 / program error / it's not programmed by Microsoft, is it? ) -- the bitch switched off 3 times (batteries) in a row while practicing lazy eights, no damage to the heli although cruising rather low at say 2 m of altitude, now it doesn't spool up any more, just tries and stops again and flashes it's code 6. We shall see what Kontronik says to that one.
My ESC is 11 months old, doesn't get that hot and worked flawless until the day before yesterday.

Hi Eddi...Having the ESC on the throttle and controlling it with the idle up switch does allow me to work pitch independent from the throttle, they are 2 seperate channels. When i switch idle up on, I am still at -10 degrees pitch. Anyway, I flew this thing yesterday,( first time), using the above set-up, and now I have another problem. I did not have what I considered much head speed, I would have to guess around 1200-1300rpm, seemed slow. I had (2) 10 minute flights, just hovering around and slow, low altitude FF. On the second flight, in a hover, it just quit, got it down ok. Upon inspection, I found what looked like small, fine aluminum dust on top of the motor end plate. I have no idea where it came from, the motor feels free, don't know. Anyway, now the motor will not start, I get no blinking light, or audible sound from the ESC. There are no fried wires, none of the connections look bad, I just can't get it to do anything at all....Any ideas?.....Coop

I got reply from Kontronik just now, they say it might be an older model and needs software update.
The symptoms look similar, just off and down it goes ... in my case once after 4, then after 10 mins of flight.
Mine went well for 11 months ...
But mine still "tries" and blinks and goes through the programming routine.
Maybe you try and contact mike@kontronik.com, hope he speaks sufficient english to help and tell you what you can do or where to find a dealer.
I'll keep you posted.

Was still asleep when answering this morning, here's something else:

To the aluminium dust, I think I didn't have that even on the first flights.
But you wrote in another thread that your motor behaved strangely... maybe there's a problem ... did the pre-owner ever start/test it?

When switching off then on again the rx and disconnecting then reconnecting the batteries, does the ESC do anything? Blink, beep?

To the headspeed: can't measure or compare, my first heli was also electric but a Kalt Baron Whisper which was way smaller and sounded completely other ... also it's 'bout 10 years ago ...
Maybe you can compare it to your other helis or know someone who can measure it.
At 50-60 % throttle it sounds slow but is not sluggish to fly,
at 70-85 % throttle it sounds "right" and it's really responsive.

BEAT update

I sent my ESC to kontronik 2 days ago and got it back today !!!
They say they've replaced some dead smd parts and updated hard- and software to the recent version. Looks to me as if it were new ...
My connectors are on, so I can connect, program and go. Kewl. And there's no invoice with it as of today, just some maintenance report. Should I be that lucky? Is kontronik that great?

Furthermore they advise not to strap the ESC into the ship (the way VARIO has printed it in the manual, they don't say) but only fix it by the cables some way or another. That way you shouldn't damage any electronic parts and get better cooling.

Nice to have the manufacturer only 'bout 50 kilometers away
But FedEx will also deliver within a few days...
Did you already get in touch with them?

I sent my motor and ESC out to them today, we'll see what they have to say, I'm sure it will take a little longer for them to receive it though, I'm a little more than 50km away, ....Coop
