Gasser Model RC Helicopters > spark plug gap???

Being new to gas engines.I have read about maintaining a .022 gap.Now I don't have a spark plug gauge yet but what is the gap of a new plug out of the box.Does this gap need to be adjusted regularly or is it just not really that important.

There is a tool you can buy for gap checking. I believe when it comes to spark and glow plugs just heave it over your shoulder and put a new one in when you question it. Its just not worth it.

The gap doesn't wear much in use, but you could check it now and again. A new plug should be checked, it is unlikely to be correct out of the package.

Plug Gap

Bill Meador suggests an 18 to 22 thou gap on the plugs for the Zenoah RC230. I bought a new plug and it was gapped too wide. Adjusted it and it works great. Gap checking devices are pretty cheap I think. I'm going to buy one today.

You city folk you kill me.Just popping in to my local Canadian Tire Store involves a 2.5 hour drive ha ha ha.You kill me.Thanks for the info.

Now does the gap really play a huge factor in performance. What does one do to correct a gap,Just tap the top with a small hammer??

Spark Plug Gap

If the gap isn't correct, according to the experts I've spoken with, the engine will not run properly. On most spark plug gappers there is a notch used to twist the lead into position. But the light tap with a hammer would do just as well.

Sorry you have to drive so far.

spark plug

The spark plug plays a very important role in the combustion process, if the gap is set or worn to lets say .030 when it is supposed to be .022 the energy to to make the spark requires several thousand volts more, now when the engine is under a load the voltage must increase for the spark to occur. my guess is that the RC230 at idle will have a spark plug voltage of 5000 volts, under load it will be 20,000 volts, as a matter of fact tomorrow I will put a scope on mine and then we will know. The bottom line to this is if to high a voltage is required for the spark to happen the coil and plug wire will leak energy(cause missfire and RF problems)

Plug juice

We put a plug tester on my RC230 a couple of days ago and the guy holding it on while I pulled the start cord got zapped big time. He grounded himself. Fortunately not a lot of amps behind the voltage. The juice is there for sure.

The gap of the plug also affects the timing. As was said a wider gap takes more voltage to jump the gap. So a narrow gap will take less voltage to jump across, so a narrow gap/less voltage/earlier firing, wider gap/more voltage/later firing. Sometimes you can smooth out a engine by changing the gap. This info comes from Bruce Bennett gloe engine guru, he knows a little about gas engines too.

plug type

Hello.I just pulled my plug to check the gap and found out that the plug is a NGK CMR 7H?..I thought the plug recomended was the BMR 7A By BillMe.Is this plug OK or should I switch it .
The gap is .025 How do you adjust the gap on this plug.I know you are to rotate something but what is the technique??

CMR7H

That's the plug that comes withthe RC230. Bill Meador says the gap should be .18 to .22. I don't know about the other plug and that engine.

plug gap

be very careful when adjusting the gap on any plug, do not hit the plug or drop it, there is a trade saying ( if you drop a spark plug once--drop it again in the trash) that is hard to do when you drop a $50.00 iradium aircraft plug. as mentioned earlier there are special tools, go to your local parts store.

I will try to fly mine today and see what the KV values are.

I'm assuming to adjust these plugs you lossen the cap that's theaded on the end then rotate the electrode with a special tool that grips the little bar on top.Is this correct?
How do you adjust plugs that don't have a removable cap?

to adjust the gap of the spark plug you need to gently bend the side electrode either closer to or further away from the center electrode.

You make small adjustments and then check the gap with a feeler guage.

Try to be gentle and not bend things too hard so you don't slip and break anything.

It's actually quite easy to do. It just takes the right tools. You can get a 'spark plug gap tool' at almost any hardware or automotive shop. They are quite inexpensive. Most are combination gap tool and feeler guage.

Does this help at all?
