What are some ways to get rid of these speed holes on my Fiberglass canopy? Anybody got any suggestions?

as i write this i too am working on pinholes in my vigor canopy. i found that the red oxide primer glaze at NAPA $12.00 for a 16oz tube, works great. im on the first coat and it sands good with 320 wet/dry in the tub and warm water.(not me in the tub). i first shot a coat of primer, let it dry over night then swiped a dab of glaze in each hole i could see. once i get all the freckles sanded down and the primer looks good. ill shoot another coat of primer and look for more pinholes and do the same again.

Well ,, the best thing is evercoat glaze coat. It is a 2k lightweight finishing glaze. Mix a small amount and use a razorblade to fill the pin holes, try not to build up the area but fill the hole and scrape it clean. The laquer glaze holds well but it will either bleed through later and or it will shrink after you have applied your finish!!! leaving small shrink spots.... Good Luck Rob (PPG Tech)

Thanks Guys,

I've been priming and sanding for better than 10 hours and still to many holes. I was about to give up on it and just paint it, but will try some of the things mentioned.

Joe, what are you thinning the puddy with? And where can I get some?

Thanks again,

A sanding I will go.....

Beedub,

When I was finishing my Dauphin I sanded pin holes and did filler work for almost two weeks stright. It was worth it!

Good luck.

Beedub, I'v painted canopies that should have been sold as paint strainers, not canopies! The problem I had was any putty you use is about the same hardness after it dries as the surrounding fiberglass so when you sand the puttied pinholes you actually open up more of the cloth (pinholes)! Here is what I do... scuff the entire canopy with a Red Scotchbrite pad, not sandpaper. Spray a coat of white paint on the whole canopy and let it dry (24 hours or more). Now putty your pinholes and you will find the putty will sand flush with the paint (which is harder) and no new holes will result! Just a vairation on Canopy-FX's gelcoat method but not as expensive! Dave, I've seen the Dauphin up close and personal. Looks good. I was out there when you flew it for the first time. Andy, Anthony, yada yada yada, are who I fly with.

Chris,
I think I got one of those paint strainers you're talking about. I've got a pretty good base coat of primer down. So I guess you guys better go out and buy some stock in puddy and sandpaper, I'm about to make you rich if you do!

Trust me this one is nasty! I'm glad to see he is gel coating them now.

Your local hobby shop can order white squadron putty, it works great and sands easy.

You can do what I do some times. I use a high fill urethane primer! It does work well.

Thanx!

I'm just painting a canopy for my Freya. I was going to come out to the field on Sunday but I guess you can figure out why I didn't. (20mph winds) I did fly Saturday morning, it wasn't too bad.
