I don't like the idea of the carb horn hanging out without a filter & a rotor disk blowing down dust all over & inside this fine engine! Has anyone done anything about this ? If so what? & does it affect tunning & where to get the parts? I see slight score marks on the piston already with only about 2 gals thru it.

You can put a Vario air filter on it, if it makes you feel better.

As you wish........

mine has alot more than 2 gallons thru it......and no filter. You can choose grass to land/takeoff from, as it traps the dirt beter than concrete or asphault. Hope this helps.........and good luck..its an awesome engine!

Al;
The vario airfilter, does it affect tunning or performance at all? & where do I get it?

www.variocanada.com has them

Doing aerial photography has me operating from some very dusty locations at times. The Vario K&N air cleaner is doing its job very well.
I have close to thirty hours on a Benzin Trainer and the motor is clean as a whistle inside with no scratches on the piston, the cylinder looks like new inside. There is plenty of power to lift 8lbs of camera gear with ease.

No, the fliter should not effect tuning at all. Dan Grandmaison Vario Canada is a good guy, and should keeo it in stock.

Depending on the airfilter you use, you must play a little with the needles. The K&N filter used by VARIO and many others has two problems. First you will like to have the most direct airflow from the filter to the carb. The most lineal itīs the better as you will get a laminar airflow. Not easy to have it so with the original stock filter coupler from VARIO (it has non aligned holes) Can admit it is the easiest way to fit it as it is just plug an play but can be better done.
The second problem is common to all filters : You must use the special oil to make the air filter work at 100% but you must use an exactly amount of it or remove from it the excess using pressured air form inside to outside till you are able to breathe from it without noticing any airflow resistance.
If you dont use the oil it will only filter big particles but not the little ones. If you donīt remove the oil excess you will run a rich mixture as you will have less air for the same fuel amount and slow airflow speed that reduces the fuell dispersion into the carb.reducing power and giving lot of headache when trying to get the righ carb setup (some carbs are more more sensitive to its use than others i.e. the old one on the G23)
Air flow speed helps the fuel to disipate and due to it a velocity stack is very usefull.(more airl through the same carb diameter needs more speed) Unfortunately Iīve never saw a velocity stack with an air filter fited. I made it with a lathe and you can see it on my gallery. It works fine and I needed to open the needles a little to get the right fuell/air combination and having no power reduction. This rich carb setup helps with temperature and have no problem to run a 4% oil mix with both needles between 1+3/8 and 1+1/2.

The bad side is my Heli sucks fuell like a nitro (but power has always some cost )

Hope it helps
