HIROBO X-spec - Freya - Sceadu - Shuttle > How do I make my Freya lighter?

I need some ideas on how to lighten up my Freya. I am going to use an Eagle fiberglass canopy, change the landing gear, adapt a lighter tailboom to the hex style mounts.......Any other ideas? Which weighs more...high quality alluminum or the plastic that is found on the Freya?

Hey Kurt, I thought you were going back to the PHI series? As to shedding weight; The Freya is indeed a Fatty...some things you mentioned would work just be careful when you "adapt" other parts to your heli; a Carbon Boom weights less but is aslo less rigid than a metal boom and can cause problems with a Good HH Gyro!. My personal advise would be to sell the bird and get a heli you want more...the resale on "customized" machines is very low indeed! On the other hand; you could install a YS 80 and some longer blades and it would acompilsh the same thing...a better Power to Weight Ratio! Good Luck! Maxx

Hey Maxx....the boom I was going to use was a PHI boom. It is large enough for a belt driven tail. I wouldn't really be modifying the machine...just making an adapter for the boom and the tail case. the fiberglass canopy and the boom are 2 items that I already have on hand. The only thing that I would have to buy would be the landing gear. In your opinion, what wheighs more...the Hirobo plastic or aluminum? Let me know what you think..........thanks once again!

Plastic

Hey Kurt,

The plastic gear weighs more than the aluminium. It's not by much though. Also the aluminium doesn't hold up to hard landings to well. By that I mean it flatens out. Yes you can bend it back but it's a pain.

I thought you where going to go with the bigger engine? THat should solve all your problems with weight. The YS 80 or the OS91 should be able to toss the Freya around like a 30 size machine and a 50 in it. For what it's worth I plan on going with the YS 80...sooner or later.

That is my eventual plan....I just was going to lighten it up a bit for now. Maybe when Christmas comes around, Santa will bring me a new YS80.

Last week, Jeff Green was experimenting with carbon lower frames on the Freya. It will become available if the weight savings are worth it. The spacers still have to be there either way, the fan shroud he has is much lighter than the plastic one within the plastic lower frame, it does require a metal angle for attaching the landing gear. I'll make a new posting when I find out the results of his tests.

I still think the best plan is to go with the OS91, you can use 15% and in the long run you will save money and have better performance. The OS91 blows the doors off the YS80. We have several of each up here and the 91 is the obvious winner, wait until CY makes a true 91 muscle pipe!!!!!!!! My friend modified a muscle pipe, extending the cannister about two inches. Unbelievable performance! I use the hatori muffler with 30% a governor, and it will not bog. The 60 size muscle pipe works well too. I had it on for a week or so. I really like my governor and the muscle pipe kept fighting it, too lazy to keep adjusting the throttle curve.

The 11 tooth pinion will be available from Hirobo middle of November.

I spoke with Jeff Green today for almost an hour....one heck of a nice guy and he really knows his helis! He said that after installing the carbon fiber frames, braces, mounts, spacers, etc...that the machine only weighed an ounce or two less. In other words, not worth the trouble. He also suggested the OS 91 which seems to be the popular opinion....also heavier blades for better autos since the machine is a little heaver. What I have learned is that I have to be smoother on the sticks with the WC. I really dont want to weaken my Freya by adding a bunch of lightweight parts so the 91 is the answer for me I guess. Thanks to everyone for their input!
