I have an Xcell Gasser now!!!! Wooo Hooo!

What servos should I use? Is the 401/9253 sufficient for tail? What upgrades should/must be done?

Congrats!

Is it still in the box?

I use the 401/9253, works fine. Upgrade the muffler from stock, if you're gonna fly it around in hot humid Iowa summer.

Most will tell you to upgrade the carb to the w603t if it didn't come with that

It is new, not in the box, guy had it and never even ran 1 gallon through it. It is the version previous to the current version with the Hanson modified G23 and some bergen upgrades. It will make you sick how I got it. I traded a brushless ECO 8 for it. He still has other parts he is going to give me, but I am sending him some extra stuff to say thanks

So I got a GREAT deal. It looks brand new.

But what servos do you run for collective. Someone I know suggested that I get the JR8411's because of all the torque needed for collective. Right now I have 9202's available, so I am woundering if that will be enough. He also said I needed 90 in/pd torque servos for the tail. That seems really excessive to me. And I have a couple of 401/9253 combos right now.

SERVOS!

I fly a BERGEN Gasser .... The GY401 is Fine but I like a Futaba 9205 on the Tail and JR4131 servos for Everything Else. Stay away from the 8411's .. They had some issues. Enjoy

Hey David!

You lucky dawg!
I'd love to get a gasser....
Although, as Doc Timmy would agree, I am looking
at getting the Bergen Gasser!
I recently acquired a Bergen 46 Intrepid with an OS50
in it that the gentleman in Louisianna couldn't make fly.
I did, and the birdy is absolutely as smooth as a singer
sewing machine! Now I love the Bergen line!
I am told the new Zenoah G-26 is the cats on the bird!
And Hey, with a gasser you SAVE 13.20 an hour!!!!!
Got to get up to Harlan one day this summer.
Did ya hear that Marlyn T passed? Eldora, Iowa.
Hey how's the flying going? You flyin inverted 5ft agl yet?

I use Hitec HS-605BB "super torque" servos on all but the tail. High torque at reasonable price

Missed you last night Byron.

I have been having problems with my eyes the last few weeks so I have not been flying until they cleared up. They are getting there. I hope to get some stick next week and go to the Des Moines Grand event the following week.

I would like a Bergen, but have not made quite the deal on that, yet. But with Xcell support right in Des Moines, I cannot go wrong.

Yes, I heard, it is too bad. He was a great guy.

Servo's......

David: here is what I have on a machine exactly like yours........including the Hansen modded 23....a real powerhouse !

Gyro/servo is 9253 with a 401.....I am using the rear servo mount that comes off the top of the lower frames....and a Carbon fiber control rod .

Servo's are JR 8231 on all positions except throttle. I use a standard servo on it for safety reasons.......one that most folks wouldn't think of......for a penny, I'll tell you why.

DS 8311 servo's would be the ones to use in the JR line.....lots of torque, and good speed. I had failures with 8411's, but so far the 8311's have been OK.

Futaba 9202's would work OK except for collective IMHO. Need more power than the 9202 I think.

One note.....tuning that hansen will make a heck of a difference in tail stability. It will fool you into thinking the 401 sensitivity is too high if not tuned well. Leave the 167a carb on it. Per Hansen. The motor mods were setup for that carb...the 603 will cause it to "bog" when throttle is slammed. It makes plenty of power now. With no "bog".

If you have any other ??? then let me know. You have a great machine there.........just get it setup right and start smiling for a long time. I would pass on the Bergan myself if you already have the xcell.....it would be a "lateral" move I think. If you are wanting a different gasser in the near future........I have an idea on that as well.........but it will take 10 cents to make me talk about that .

James,
Where do I send my 10 cents? I want to hear more on the "Bog" deal with the 603....
Thanks,
Bill

I'd hope to get a bite........!

Just the man I was trolling for.......use that dime to call B.H. Hansen.......for that is whom I asked about upgrading MY carb to a bigger one......I doubt he would pass on a sale if he didn't think it would help. I'm open to other opinions as well........

As far as the dime for the info on a different gasser.........you will get it no charge, Bill. Check your email. James

By the way...

David:
Larry Bergen told me he utilizes the JR 4131 on all his rigs.
Ricky likes the JR line too, and the 8411 was his first choice
but the 8311 is now fully heli-rated as mentioned.

I used the Futaba 9206 on my Intrepid Collective
as RicksHeli, CC TX had it on the shelf for $115.
A metal gear, semi quick, powerful non-digital servo
even if a bit pricey!

(Had you heard I had a complete mally on the 9204 COLL
servo two friday fun fly's ago!(?)
I had just pulled out of a loop and hit power to 3/4 stick.
As I turned north and inbound, the intrepid just kept
descending. Which is really freaky when you've topped
the thr/coll and have engine whine but no climb! A first for me.

I believe the servo gear had stripped and stopped at somewhere
around 2 or 3 degrees positive. Because the descent rate was
fairly fast but not like a bomb drop!
Just at ground level, waiting for the inevitable explosion, I flared
with whatever pos I had and it hit hard, started to tip and I caught
it by pure luck and instinct! (I also lucked out that day because
all the rain we had been getting had made the ground very soft or I
surely would have seen her blow!) I have 9202's on CYC too.

Three days later, I had the THR servo go out in my Quick Pro!
Thankfully I wasn't in the air at the time! But due to the COL servo
failure on the Bergen, I found it at preflight engine start!
S-148 is no long on that bird's THR! Just lucky so far this season!

I'd sure like to see that gasser fly one of these fridays!
Were you there at La Vista?
I had new tires put on my Motorcy and it took longer than I
had thought. I did go up to NW High and get two flights in B4 sunset!
Later,
By

James, there is no need in me calling Hanson.... I just wanted to know what he told you that convinced you not to try it....It sure works good for me, even on my old stock puh. If it works that good on a stock engine, then it should do wonders on a old Hanson conversion...BTW, I retired that engine...Going to give it to local guy here in South MS that can use it...I'm running behind on getting my new engines going...Waiting on head parts that I've desided to upgrade...
There are other things that can cause bogging, mainly set-up...If you don't believe me, ask Chris Bergen..

Regards,
Bill

Your word is Gospel

Bruce relayed to me that the modded G-23 (especially the older ones which I have) were set up for the 167A.......he didn't mention setup, but we were pressed for time on that conversation. I got the machine.........you got the carb........lets torque and tune first chance we get. I'll buy the gas.........er........for the heli, that is.......

Thanks for the info guys. I have to order some servos now. Would the same apply to a nitro SE?

Yep

A rule of thumb......the high torque digitals are suitable for ALL sizes of heli's......sure, overkill on a 30 Hawk.........but can handle the 90's and gassers no problem. James
