Are wip antennas a good idea or just something fancy looking?

I use them on all my Heli's. Much easier than routing an antenna wire around the frame, and saves stepping on, pulling out or damaging a hanging antenna wire.
They say you'll lose some range with a whip antenna, but I've never seen any loss. If you can still see it, you'll be in range is my theory on it. After that it really doesn't matter anyway.

Wip

Do you think it helps in radio glitzs..
I have the nice metal landing gear struts on my Rappy 30 and after putting them on I started getting some eratic tail wags. Thought maybe it was the routing of my antenna.

Its possible. Glitches can be caused by SOOO MANY different things its impossible to say. If you had a setup that was working with no glitching. and all you did was add metal struts. I could be the routing. Try rerouting the antenna away from the struts. If it goes away you have your answer. If not you need to play detective. Start with the obvious, loose receiver crystal ( Put a piece of tape over it to hold it in. ) Frayed or damaged antenna wire. (Sometimes an antenna wire can be broken in the plastic covering and you won't see it. It occasionally makes or looses contact causing the glitches.)
If its nothing obvious then you have to start checking other things. Try swapping receivers if you have a spare. Check your bearings. (Worn bearings can cause metal to metal interferance).

Hope this helps you out abit.

I have them too

I run Revolution whip ant. on my machines. They are good. I hav noticed that if I run them with a FM/ppm reciever that I don't have the same range as I do with a PCM.

Now I'm not trying to start an new debate on the PCM-PPM issue. But a static machine with my FM/PPM reciever starts to jump and twitch at 75'. My PCM reciever is good to 200'. BTW, these differences only occur with a whip antenna.

BTW, I do the range checks with my TX ant. all the way in.

If the problem started right after you added the metal landing gear, I would suspect the mounting (one of the four interface points). Glitches are from RF interference. This interference is usually caused by two metallic surfaces rubbing together. Since it started right after you mounted the gear I would suspect the gear is somehow rubbing the frame or moving from vibration. Check to make certain that the landing gear is securely mounted and that all of the mounting bolts are tight. If this does not cure the problem I would isolate the landing gear from the frame by installing something electrically non-conductive between them and the frame (perhaps nylon washers or something). If you do go this route don't foget to replace the steel mounting hardware with nylon bolts also!

I am new to heli's but I think some of you have missed an important area. He has added landing gear to the bottom and the tail is now wagging, this would suggest to me that he has increased vibrations in the heli and that these vibrations are freaking out his gyro (I have assumed he has a gyro)? Please comment.

Good catch Peguin!! He made need to drop the gain on his gyro a hair. That may be the simplest fix.
