Main Discussion > Nexus problem right before liftoff

Right before liftoff, the tail starts going right to left about 3 inches in both directions. As soon as it lifts off, it's fine and rock steady. I'm suspecting the gyro, which is a Helimax currently. I'll be putting my JR 410t in this weekend.. Any other suggestions?? It's fine as soon as it breaks ground. I do still have the trainer wheels on it. I was thinking that maybe the heli wants to turn a little, but with the wheels still contacting the ground, that it resists, and then the gyro overcompensates back and forth, and when it lifts, the drag from the wheels are no longer present, so it seems to be fine then??

my nexus had a helimax micro piezo in it, did the same thing, I think any non HH gyro will do that, turn the gain up a little. i wouldnt worry about it, its pretty normal.

Nexus.

It sounds at first that the gain may be a bit high, if it's fine after lift off then maybe you aren't giving it enough time to spin up before lift off?
If so just let the head speed come up and then lift off gently and see if that helps.
Also, the set up of the tail push rod and servo should be done at mid stick, everything set at 90 deg. I forgot this once and it was VERY interesting until I figured out what I screwed up.
Maybe if that is off a bit you won't have enough tail authority to handle the torque until you increase the collective to climb into hover position.
I haven't seen many comments on the JR 410, I'm sure it will be fine.

come to think of it BladeRunner is probably right, if you spool up slow, it wont kick so much, how is your gain right now? i always kept mine in the middle (50%)

Thanks!! I'll have to check it when I get home (i'm at work right now )

Anyway, I think I turned the gain down a little already.. hard to see the pot inside that case.. I did however let it spool up slowly.. I let it sit so it's just barely light on the skids for about 10 sec before I slowly lift it up. It just seems to do that when the wheels are on the ground. As soon as it lifts, it's fine..

I'm thinking putting the better 401t in should help as well.. I haven't heard too much praise over the Helimax.... Maybe I'll put that in my Cap 232..

I'm ordering a new tachometer so I can tach the rotor speed.. I just have to figure out how I want to go about doing so.. I can stand in front of a 24" prop with no problem, but I'm just leary about approaching a heli with rotor's at full tilt!!!!!

Thanks again,
Vo Decker

and YES!!! I'm a planker and I'm proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you flying off pavement? If so, try some skid stops. If off grass, it shouldn't be as big a deal.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Tach?

I have the MA tach, it works great, but, you need a helper to use it safely, you can check the head speed from across the field if you like-excellent tach.

what servo are you planning on using with the jr410T? I have a hitec 525bb and cannot get the tail to stop wagging in HH mode. I tried changing gain settings (pain in the a-s with this gyro) and still unsucessful. Horizon suggested i switch to a faster JR servo. What do you think? BTW, i'm currently flying in non-HH mode for now which works fine - this is my first HH-capable gyro i've used.

Make the servo horn on the 525 longer. I have a Telebee set at 16mm, and it holds fine. Making the horn longer effectively creates a "faster" servo. See if it helps. Also make sure the tail rotor is smooth, and bind free.

Thanks, John Cadwell

thanks John - easy fix to try until i can free up ~$100.00 for a fast JR servo.
