I have been reading a lot about these motors for the Hummingbird, it seems like a pretty good mod. I am interested in purchasing one, where can I find one of these motors? Also, does anyone have the full name of the motor or the part number?

Thanks

It is a great motor for the Humming Bird! I just went to Tower Hobbies and they have search button. Just Type in Orion Elite Micro Modified. And It should come up. It even shows the gears and all for it. I'm currently running a 10 tooth and it works great. You might be able to find them else where but I have been finding allot of people are out of them. Since TowerHobbies had them in stock I just went through them. I ordered it on a friday and it was at my door on Monday. Take care.

I got mine from Tower hobbies as well...no one local had any or even knew what I was talking about.. grab a few pinions as well for you to get the ratio the way you like it. Jeff

Screws

No, the stock screws do not fit onto the Orion motor... I think they need to be 2 x 5mm ? all you need are the screws, washers, a soldering iron to attach you're motor leads ( plug) or install a plug terminals and a pinion...I did not try the stock 10t pinion on the Orion just tried the 9t, 11t, and stuck with the 12t pinion for now...

Also just to let you know the Orion motor runs in a different direction than the helo motors. So after you connect it just go to the humming board where the motor connects to and turn it around. And she will work awesome for you!!!!!

Anyone know the stats on the Orion Elite Micro Modified Motor? Like rpm/v (Kv) Idle Current (Io) Resistance (Ri), or any other info. I cannot find it anywhere on the internet.

NM as soon as I ask I find them....FYI

Elite Modified Technical Data
Watt: 5
No load Speed: 6.0 Volt 17820 rpm - 7,2 Volt 21384 rpm
Stall Torque: 29.7 mNm
Terminal resistance: 0,325 Ohm
Efficiency: 87%
Magnet: Neodym
Commutator: 9 segments
Brushes: Precious metal
Weight: 42g
Length: 28,9 mm
Diameter: 21mm

This translates to 2970rpm/v . Damn that seems low. This must be one torquey motor.

anyone know if the motor is 'timed' at all?

As you know you have to run it backwards on the hummingbird and piccolo.... I am planning on making a custom chasis for my Hummingbird, and was thinking about flipping the motor over Hornet style... especially if the motor will run better in that direction, only problem is it will require shortning the main shart... probably not worth the effort if it is not going to make any difference to how the motor runs.

orion elite micro bonfife

hi guy's just wanting to let you know that if you run the orion elite micro modified motor you need a high frequencey controler or otherwise it burns out after about 10 flights.....trust me mine did.........

Well mine lasted longer than 10 flights, but it did get real hot and eventually burned out. It uses wipers instead of brushes.

A better alternative IMO if you are using the Humming Board would be the Acro280BB motor. It uses brushes and they are replaceable.

you can find the orion motor at helihobby.com

also, how much would it it improve the piccolo's performance?

i live at 8000ft and i need something powerful to get the heli in the air. could i run a 11 tooth pinion on that motor? does the piccoboard work for the motor?

thanks

Running 8 cells and 8T pinion, on the Piccolo/Piccoboard wih the Orion, you will have to trim your blades, or run MS Hornet blades. Too much torque for the tail to keep up with. The 9T pinion gave slightly lower flight times and hotter motor. My longest flight on 700mAh cells was upper 12 minutes, but normally mid 10's.

I never ran 7 cells, and don't know the gear ratio of the h-bird, or how much pitch the h-bird has in the blades.

I no longer own it, a friend does, but it's been flying that way for 2 years now (uncountable # of flights). When I sold it, I took out the 'brushes' to replace them (I bought a couple spares just in case), they they didn't need it, still the first set on it today. With the right gearing the motor shouldn't get real hot. If it does you could damage the magnets, I don't know what the hottest temp is that Orion recommends. They did recommend using the Jeti050 ESC for it though. I used that ESC after going to separates.

Have been reading and everyone mentions that you'll need a high freq ESC to run the Orion, what about a GWS 300ESC ???What is making the motor req the higher freq, amp burst, max current or is it that everyone is using lipos with it ???

I did, for my heli, building the Card Cobra from modeltec to put all the BL into. I have the orion just laying around so I thought about another pending project, an RC F-16 and the EDF50 fan housing. My plan is to install the Orion into the EDF 50 fan housing then install into the F-16. The 16 was designed as a slope glide and potential EDF but the GWS EDF50 doesn't have the ummph, so insted of going brushless on the F-16 thought about the Orion, it has great reviews, so why not. I have my HummerBoard and a GWS 300 ESC also laying around but wasn't sure if they could support the Orion. If the Orion works well in the F-16 then probably upgrade my A-10 to Orions also.
