I just got a used Freya for my birthday. The engine shaft has 2 bearings just below the starter coupler. Do I need to remove the main gears to insert them into the main frame? Can't seem to get them in otherwise. Thanks.

Here's the scoop

Those bearings are supposed to be glued into place, as are all the bearings in the main frames. To replace them you might have to drop the main gear assy. Not hard to do that BTW.

Best way to replace them would be split the frames and do a proper job of swapping them out.

Good Luck

No you do not have to split the frames to replace the bearings. Just loosen the frame bolts neear the bearings and they will drop out. Glueing them in the frames just adds a little more friction to the equation. The glue let go on mine sometime ago. No probs to date. In fact I wore out mainshaft bearings and replaced those just recently. I also replaced the clutch bell top bearing, no glue. I did glue initially, but that did not hold. No adverse effeects.

ampex456 = Jeff Green?

I sure would like to know what ampex456 means.

Miata guy,

If the above responce is Jeff Green then Trust him! He knows Freyas better than anyone except maybe Todd Benett. But it's hard to say

If he says you can do it then you can.

ampex456 is probably referring to a type of open reel magnetic
tape (remember that?) used for recording. Good tape but it had
flaking binder problems in long term storage. I have many reels of
it sitting in a closet.

As I recall, JeffG was into audio engineering before he became a
heli-god.

On my machine, I took the suggestion of someone else and cut
up some thin K/S brass shim material and made a .001-2 or so shim
to wrap around those bearings to hold them in place w/o glue.

Hellooooo,

Yes ampex456 is the first reel of recording tape I opened and I LOVE the smell. Nothing like the smell of fresh recording tape early in the morning (or before the session)

Yes its me.

Glad to see you Jeff! Now I understand the refference to the tape. I too am in the beginings of a move to a new/second career. Just 3 more years and I retire from the Air Force.
