Crashed? Discussion and Photos > tail servo unplugged!

UGH!

Was buzzin around after work tonight, and only into my 1st 1/2 tank of fuel, and all of a sudden, my tail stops responding. I'm out at the soccer field, way out over the trees, and I can't orient my heli the right way around... not so bad, recoverable even, as long as the servo holds the tail rotor steady...

But just then, when I realize what is happening... she decides to drift towards the setting sun. So not only can I not control the tail, but I can't see the damn thing either... AAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

thwack! the sound of my blades being stuck 6 inches into the ground, with the usual being all bent out of shape (flybar, main shaft, feathering spindle) as well as the skids snapping the corners off the frames, and the servo tray practically coming completely detached from the heli... and then I noticed that my tail servo plug had wiggled out of it's connection to the gyro... I think maybe I had the wire a little bit too tight

Total cost CDN $312... pretty well the cost of a new shuttle plus kit... UGH!

On all my connections I take an 18 inch piece of dental floss, double it up, and wrap it through the wires of one servo end, and through the wires of the other servo wires end, wrap it a few times around, and then tie a knot to keep them joined. Daz...

Janek, if you cant tie a knot with the dental floss just use a longer piece, cut off the excess, and you wont have a problem. I dont necessarily like the CA idea, for 3 reasons, 1st off use too much and it runs, and is going to be a bear to get apart. 2, CA after awhile eats away the plastic, and after removing a number of times, and regluing your going to have bad connectors on an expensive heli servo. 3, CA is brittle and b4 you know the vibration of the heli may break that small dot of CA. Dental floss is bullet proof!!!

Janek, cant say I carry a toothbrush to the field, but I have gargled with my share of Wildcat , and a small container of Dental floss in the field box doesnt take much room, and lasts forever. Have you ever seen what most CA kept in the field box looks like, Hard!!!

someone

cant remember who...makes little yellow clippy like thingys that hold the servo wires together when pluged end to end...from what I saw they worked pretty well

I like using Heat Shrink over the joins. Then slice with a Stanley Knife to undo.

The advantage of this method is it keeps the joint clean from oil / fuel etc.

Yet another way - I found it on Curtis' website and I do it on all my connections now. Double back the connection on itself then put a small zip tie round it . I tried CAing it but I don't really trust glue that much.

I don't carry a toothbrush to the field but I was shown how to use one to install the fan on my raptor 30 and since then I keep one in my toolbox for repairs and maintenance. As for the servo coming undone I've never heard of that before.

Use the heat shrink tube

I usually use the hear shrink tube around male and famale connectors and it looks great and works well.

Hot Glue not too bad either.. holds pretty well and easy to peel it off if needed to..

Thanks Ghia!!!

I'm surprised more arent using that technique, easy to replace at the field, cheap to use, and very strong, and you get plenty of ties from one dental floss roll. All these ideas on using heat shrink tubing, CA glue, hot glue, expensive clippie things, zip ties, are all troublesome, I cant believe people make it that difficult. Daz...

Midwestpilot was right on -- I just bought some of the yellow "clippy things" the other day at my LHS -- I too can't remember who makes them -- but the work great, and are easy to remove -- also, the only cost about $1 each -- cheap insurance.

Great Baja, I thought you would like that idea, it works great, and it doesnt get any cheaper to do than that, and you probably have some dental floss already, hopefully!!!

midwestpilot,

I have started using those yellow clippy things about 6 months ago and I am extremely happy with them. They hold the wire very securely. I use it to connect my GY-601 amp to the 9251. During my last crash, the servo tray broke and pulled on the 9251 cable very hard. Instead of the wires breaking, the yellow clip just gave way. So at least right now anyway, it seems as if its more than strong enough to keep the wires secure during a flight, but if its pulled on extremely hard, it will give way, and in my opinion, this is when I would want it to give way.

I've used the dental floss method on heli's, and planes, and have had some of the hardest crashes with planes, and have never pulled a wire from the servo with this technique. Daz...

Daz, I'm not saying that you will definitely rip a wire out of the plug using your method. What I am saying is that it definitely would have happened if I used your method before my last crash. And I'm glad I wasn't using your method, because if I was I would be resoldering servo leads to my 9251.The tray that the 601 was on increased in distance by like 6 inches from the 9251, extremely quickly, and the frames buckled out a good inch too.

Keep em together

IMO, I like the twist ties that come with the garbage bags. They hold up well and if you do crash they will break and not rip the wires out of the electronics like the zip ties and dental floss do. (Yes, this happened to me of course)

Most of all have fun
