HIROBO Freya - Sceadu - Shuttle > Suggestions for min. servo specs....

I'm looking into getting a Sceadu 50 as my first heli. As such, I was wondering what you all recommend as minimum specs for servos (torque, speed)? Should I be looking into metal geared servos?

I'm also considering the 9CHP radio, which come with the 9001 servos. Should I just stick with those servos since I'm a beginner or should I invest in stronger servos now?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The 9001 servos will be just fine for your sceadu 50

Thanks for both of your input. I'll stick with the 9001 servos then.

I have all hitec servos. Depending on the gyro you get, pick up a high speed tail servo, and make the collective servo a little more powerful. The tail has to be fast and not powerful, and the collective needs powerful, but not fast. I have a sceadu 50, and have Hitec 625s on the cyclics, and a 645 on the collective. All metal gear too. The 9001 would work, but I like the insurance policy of extra torque, speed, and beef in the bigger 50. Can you buy the 9C without the servos?

9001
4.8VDC: 43.3oz-in. 0.242 seconds

525MG
4.8VDC: 77 oz-in. 0.16 seconds

645MG
4.8VDC: 107 oz-in 0.23 seconds

Thanks, John Cadwell

I'm not sure if you can buy a 9C without the servos. If anyone knows of a place that does, please let me know! I'd rather get just the radio w/o the servos so I can pick my own. Otherwise... I guess I'll stick with the 9001 for sake of up front costs if they'll do the job for now.

The manual says to use a servo with 6kg/cm or more torque for pitch.

Thanks Taipan for the info.

Anyone know what 6kg/cm converts to oz/in?

86.5 oz-in. The 9001 is on the weak side. As for the 9C without the servos, www.ronlund.com was selling 8U transmitters only for a while. Call them up, and ask about the 9C. They have it mentioned on their website, but I could not find a price...

Thanks, John Cadwell

Whoa! 6kg/cm = 86.5 oz/in? Yeah... those 9001 aren't looking so great after all.

I would assume the 9001 would be okay for the throttle? But then I've seen posts around regarding speed of the throttle servo vs. the pitch servo. So I'd have to watch for that if I did go for the 9001 on the throttle.

I'll check with Rick's about a 9C w/o servos. Hopefully they can help me out.

Thanks again for all the help you guys.

One of the things you can do to compensate for the throttle is to run the throttle ATV way down (50%), and put a LONG servo arm on the throttle. Since you don't really need resolution, you create speed by requiring the servo to travel less angular distance, but it sweeps a bigger arc with a longer arm. You then run the collective ATV way UP (150%) and run the throttle close in to the horn. It then has to move a larger angular distance, and it has less throw. A 9001 could work for the throttle if set up correctly. There really isn't any big reason why not.

Thanks, John Cadwell

I was trying my Sceadu 50 with the JR531 (comparable to the 9001) on the cyclic/collective, and I can tell you right now that the JR531 could not handle the collective. I don't think I had binding anywhere, granted that my linkages were tight being new (I don't size them when I put them on, they wear quickly anyway). I swapped the collective to a JR8411 digital high torque servo and had no problems since. I'm sure the Futaba guys can give you a good recommendation for a Futaba servo for the collective.
Since then I also replaced my cyclic servos to 8411s, but I think those are overkill.......
