I have a quick question. I just ran my Hummingbird for about 7 minutes practicing hovering. When I shut down I smelled something like a slight electrical short. I took off the canopy and noticed that the main motor was extremely hot. I can not actually say how hot because I do not have a temp gauge but it was hot to the touch but did not burn my skin (thank god). Is this temp normal and has anyone noticed the motor temp?

When I first setup the HB I had the same situation. First make sure you gear mesh between the main gear and motor are not too tight (they usually are from the factory). Then, do the collar mod to remove any binding in the swash plate. These 2 changes will allow the motor to run slightly cooler. My last suggestion would be to replace the stock motor with an Orion Micro Elite Modified w/ 10T pinion and aslo get a 2C pack of Etech LiPol's and have yourself a great time!!!!

PS also check the mesh on the T-mtr also.....you don't want to be replacing that little sucker more often then neccessary!

Thanks for the info. I will check the pinion and look for the collar mod.

I would like to get the liths but, I don't want to invest too much until I get better flying the heli.

Hummingbird Motor Temp

The same problem in my new Hummingbird. After 6 minutes of hovering, motor was really (and dangerous) hot. I changed oryginal motor for Speed 400, 7.2 V with 15 tooth pinion (from MP Jet). More power, less temperature, and only very little modyfications needed.

The main rotor shaft (mast) has a little piece of black tubing to support it and keep the rotor head at the proper position. Without it, the whole she-bang would fall down through the main frame. This tube can cause a slight amount of drag on the cyclic. Many sources (helihobby.com) offers a machined aluminum collar that replaces this tube and frees up the cyclic a bit.
