So had a flame out today, actually kinda glad since I was able to auto it in for at least nothings broke landing, ah..thats real good for me
Anyway I have a question. Can a glow plug be bad and still light? I took out the plug and put it on the glow drive and it glowed right up. Cant see anything as to why the motor quit, had full header tank, no pinches in the lines, and not a lean hot bind.....

sometimes some carbon can build up on the lead wire that is welded to the outer shell of the plug,

look at the plug with a magnifing glass to see if it looks bead blasted.. if so toss it

Yes...... I'm no expert but if it still lights, I doubt that it was the cause of your "flameout", IMO..... Usually, a bad glo plug that still lights will show signs of irratic idle and hovering and transition to hovering.... Any flameout that I've experienced while flying was due to the element totally blowing out.....

I would look for the cause to your flameout elsewhere....

Bottom line is that whether it glows or not, toss and install a new one. Very cheap insurance vs the consequences having to do another auto while not in the ideal spot.....

There is a catalyctic reation between the vaporised methanol and the platinum in the glow plug element which keeps the plug glowing when power to the plug is removed . Once the platinum becomes depleted , the plugs life is over .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Oh I replaced it aright, Im in 100% agreement. Cant trust it so I wont fly it. Made another flight (w/ new glow plug) and all went well.
What I REALLY HATE is a problem (failure) that I can not find the cause of!
Feels nice being back on the sticks again, my radio was out for service. 3 good flights, one unintended but servicable auto and the heli is ready to fly again.
NOW THATS A GOOD DAY!!!!!

I have heard people saying that even if a glow plug lights up if you take it out of the heli, it doesn't mean that it'll light up if its under compression. I am with everyone else though, if you suspect its a glow plug, then toss it.

Glow plugs can be bad even though it lights up.I have had two fail in flight, both from too lean a mix. After my hard auto I ran the heli but it had no power and sounded like it was drowning in fuel, check plug and it still lights up,I put in a new plug and it runs like a charm. The other failure was with a stupid tuned pipe that screamed for about five minutes before that one went poof.
