Aerial Photography and Video > Who has experience on Lipo packs??????? Your 2 cents

2 years now with my electric AP ship. (8S packs)

This is not much compared to some, but I have accumulated 4 dead Lipo packs by the end of this season. The math was simple...........cost per flight came out to just under $5.00

Stats.....................

Thunder power pro lite 100 cycles after 18 months (each for 2 packs)
Apogee packs 120 cycles after 2 years (each for 2 packs)

Question..................

What are the best value packs you have used?

Only 100 cycles until dead? On my 10s e-raptor, I had 3 packs with 120 cycles on them, and they were still working great ( prolites). I would have definetly gone much higher, but I sold the heli.

Rhett... I can't fly, luckily the HC Profi Can!

The Outrage LiPos seem to be quite popular these days - price is pretty good too!

Agree with Karbon on the outrages....

I dont batter an eyelid when i kill otherbrand packs in 80 flights or so.....(im not nice to them at all!,,, but thats pod and boom beaters, not at all a slick AP ship.)

So far the use that has killed all other packs evo30s, thunderpower etc..in 80 flights, has seen the outrages lasting up too 120 flights... thats just so far...havent had one go yet,,,yet being the operative word.
Maybe a brand to try?
Hope this is of some help.
Chris.

What charger are you using? Have you got a logbook for your charging times etc,. etc.? That seems like a low number.
The logbook really isn't necessary if you've only have one or two sets of batteries and you can mentally keep track of them. If you've got multiple packs then for me it's a good idea to keep track of them. If your batteries are all the same mfg. go ahead and number them to tell them apart.
If you really want to get anal about it you could measure the temp of the individual cells with one of those IR Thermometers to see if any cells are out of proportion in temps if the covering on the pack lets you see the individual cells. Kinda hard to do if the pack is completely covered! The cells in the middle will be a higher temp because there surrounded. You could do this immediately after flight or while charging to see if you can spot anything that might become a problem. I do this the first few flights and charge cycles on new batteries and every once in a while. It is not necessary every time you use the batteries.

Don't show your $$$ in the main discussion you'll start another Nitro vs. Electric "discussion" !

Maybe time is the issue. Are you guys putting all your flights within the first year or two years.

It may be I am not flying them enough within the "shelf life" to get full value.

I have a friend with the same problem. Try using a good charger that can regulate and ballance at the same time. Do not charge your batteries to 100% power, try 95%. And do not charge your batteries until you are ready to use them, storing them at 100% is bad for the battery.

I learned to fly inverted, I just stand on my head

Get Zippy lipos, and you won't be crying even if you just get 80 cycles on it..

Ditto on Tabbs comments. Great luck with anything that says Thunderpower. several packs are two years old and going strong. I suspect they are a lot like women...... the nicer you treat them the longer they stick around

Thanks Seablade,

I do log all my flight times including the Mah put back into each battery. The batteries are always balanced and charged. (thunder power 1010 and 210 balancer)

The current draw has been graphed out to try to detect the upcoming failure of a battery, however I have found my batteries slowly degrade then suddenly die within a few flights.

In my opinion, the performance of the batteries from each manufacturer has been excellent. Only the overall life leaves me disappointed.

Your welcome! Something wrong there, I don't have an answer for you from here.
Mapping the current draw is good overall and it is useful. I log it as well, but for me getting a quick temp reading when there new and comparing that as I use them seems an easier way to check them for any potential problems since doing the wiring to measure individual cells is not really easily feasable. That's what the balancers are for so you don't have to monitor voltage going into individual cells, but they don't give a readout aside from flashing lights unless somebody knows something different about it. There's some better people on here then me when it comes to electrical info, it just a matter of timing if they read the thread.
Try posting the question in the main discussion forum as well for a broader reach.

I do tend to balance then charge after I fly and then leave the batteries sit until they are needed next. This could be the next day, or a week down the road.

Could this be killing my packs?

As for my packs, it has been 3 weeks since the helicam was last up. I NEED to fly and take photographs with my new L10. The TREX is fun but its not the same. Time to get some new packs and move on.

I don't think that time is that long in a batteries life, months yes. But a week or two is okay. Lipos should not be left at 100% charge from what I remember reading, something like 40% was okay.
There is a good website about battery care, but the link is on an old hard drive.
wait, here is a link to some info, but not the site I was thinking of.
