Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > GY401 Wire partially cut..can it be fixed?

So was hovering my machine checking setup this evening and unfortunately the wire running from my 401 to the tail servo worked it's way loose enough to get into the main gear. Well the main gear chewed most of the way through all three of the wires.

So question is do I have to bite the bullet and buy a new gyro, or can I solder the wires back together and heat shrink to cover the repair.

I am confident in my soldering skills as I have a good quality iron and much experience, but what I am not sure about is if the solder joint would degrade the signal or cause other issues since I am using a digital servo.

Thanks

If you have soldering skills and a decent iron and good rosin core solder, it's an easy fix. You could snip out the damaged section, splice, and use heat shrink to cover and support the solder joints. Or you get more involved, and replace the wires altogether, this involves taking the case off the gyro and being a bit more careful working on the circuit board. If you don't, it's time to have Hobby Services take care of it.

The advice to tape it and fly it assumes you don't give a rat's a$$ about the money you've invested in your heli. Flying with frayed wires and chewed up insulation is silly and puts your heli at risk.

Simple repair job, just a single signal wire, if you do a nice clean solder job there nothing to worry about.

If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

I suggest cutting the wire and making a servo end right at that point, and then using an extension if need be.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was pretty sure that soldering the joint back together wouldn't hurt it, but it is always good to get a second opinion, especially given my lack of heli experience.

I like RadioRob's suggestion of just shortening the wire and putting the plug at the cut. Since in my setup the gyro is at the back of the bird and the servo is right there and I have plenty of servo cable to reach I think this is the best option for me.

Once again thanks for all the help.
