Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Changing Hyper 50 bearings

I just changed the bearings in my hyper 50. I placed the engine in the oven and the old ones fell out. I reheated the case a bit and then put in the new bearings. Both went in with little effort. Once it cooled both bearings were notchy! I took those out and put in another set, which seem to be ok. The bearings were from rc-bearings and seem to be good quality. The price was right too ($6 set). My question is, could the heat damage the bearings or were they just a bad set? OR did I do something wrong with the install?

How hot was the oven?

You may not have gotten them seated properly the first time around.

I usually drop the front one in place, but before I do, I put the rear bearing on the crank and make sure it's installed all the way. When I pull the hot crankcase out of the oven, as I said, I drop the front one in place, then insert the rear bearing, crank and all. Then, I put the thrust washer on and a nut (finger tight) to hold things in place till they cool down.

the oven was set to 350. I put the front one in first but I did not put the rear on the crank first. I used the crank to pull the rear in thats probably what happened. the second time around I put the bearing on the crank then pushed it into place.

""Once it cooled both bearings were notchy!""

JAdams,, this happens (happen to me, happen to my friend),,

because of the Bearings heating up the Light Grease in the Bearings has puddled and then hardened when cooled,,

the fix is to clean the bearings,,

if instaled remove the Crank, Piston and Liner, get yourself a Quart of Rubbing Alcohol and a Plastic Container with a Cover, add a few 5 or 6 ounces of R-Alcohol to the Container and Insert Engine, and let it set, I guess you could shake the Container,, repeat until the Bearings are smooth, then rinse very well one last time by just poring R-Alcohol threw the Engine, then let dry then add Oil to the Bearings,,

now build the Engine again,,

I guess you could use a De-Greaser first and let it set, then rinse well, but you would have to remove all of the De-Greaser before you put the Engine back together, and I know De-Greaser is a pain to remove,,

if someone has a better way on cleaning the instaled Bearings please feel free to suggest..

I dont clean out grease in new bearings . I'm thinking bearing was offset on installation . Put new bearing on crank then put into motor and use a soft tool or wood to tap crank and bearing lightly .

well let me put it a different way,,

1) I have my own lathe,

2) I made my own Bearing Installation Tool,

3) my 4 bearings was installed straight,

4) my 2 cranks shafts installed rather easily (this tells me MY bearings were installed correctly),

5) my 2 rear bearings was notchy after installation,

6) my 2 rear bearings were smooth after I cleaned them with Rubbing Alcohol,

7) my friend had the same thing happen to him..

thanks for the input guys. I may now have another issue.....I forgot to remove the dust shield from the inner side of the front bearing. Should I take out the bearing and remove the shield?
