As a teenager I flew radio controlled airplanes, and always had ambitions to fly radio controlled helicopters. I could not afford it through high school, or college, but now I am on the other side I looked into it again.

I picked up a fairly cheap Nexus 30 off ebay - this was the helicopter I was recommended when I looked into it. I made sure I could find parts for it, which I can. The helicopter I bought, was built but has never been flown. It comes with radio, gyro and accesories.

I plan on joining a club to get going - what other recommendations do you have? Should I send my radio off to Futbua to be checked before I try and fly with it? Should I be on the safe side, and replaced the batteries.

Thanks for any help!

If your radio is OK on the bench (servos move as they are supposed) and your range test is O.K., then just start your heli and fly. If not then have your equipment checked.

I wish I could fly 24/7

1 recomendation dump the FM transmiter and go with 2.4ghz when you can.
take it slow and get someone at a club or LHS to help out the first flight

I concur with all the above comments, but watch that spare parts supply! The Nexus, like my Raptor 30 V1 is no longer in production. The Nexus came after the Concept 30 and before the Caliber 30 didn't it?

I keep trying to convince my friend to finish building his Nexus 30 - he's happy with his Shuttle plus.

Be patient and take it slow!

Get a Flight Simulator and use it. It'll save you cash to use for parts.

Sure you can trust the government, just ask an Indian.

I really don't understand why people say this. Yes, 2.4 is better, but we sure got along on 72mhz for many years without too many problems! I still use 72mhz (PCM) on all of my heli's and planes and have no plans on switching.

Now with that said...if I were buying a new radio today, would I switch? Sure! But if he already has a decent 72mhz radio, there really is no need to switch.

agree, what's the radio? PCM? I bought a 6TXA for my first heli, and while it had heli programming, it was really poor. I would recommend you start/invest in a good radio. If the radio that came with the deal is good, then great! go for it! Otherwise look to upgrade.

2.4 ghz is virtualy glitch proof 99.0%
FM pcm isn't ! one bad bearin or radio interference and you just crashed your heli

Is it worth loosing your heli over FM ?

I crashed my cx1 fm several times due to FM glitch I won't ever go back to FM

Getting a little off subject, however 72Mhz is far more susceptible to RF noise from electric power systems than 2.4Ghz. This can be minimized with some thoughtful wiring. Nitro at 72Mhz however, doesn't suffer the same issues. I fully agree the speed and redundancy of the new 2.4 make them the only choice when buying new. The setup already had a radio, and it's a nitro machine. Treat your antenna right and it shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't trust anything less than a PCM system though.

Your radio is fine. Do you know how many people use FM and are fine. The guy is just learning and your suggestion for him is to go out and buy 2.4 for the sake of having 2.4?? Ridiculous. His money is better spent buying a sim and fuel.

Thanks guys - I have found a local guy who is willing to help me out; make sure it is set up right, trim it, and then get me in the air, and we will buddy box it up.

I don't have a flight simulator, however last time I was in the hobby store and using theirs I had minimal problems getting airborne, hovering and having a successful flight. I have flown full scale so maybe that helps!

I understand the Nexus 30 is out of production, and saw a couple places online which sell parts. I got a good deal on it, and bought it with the notion that this helicopter will get me in the air. I avoided the huge initial investment, and now my goal is to see what is worth keeping out of the package I bought, and upgrade the rest over the next 3-4 months. The Nexus always be wearing it's training gear, be flown from behind in an effort to try and increase it's longevity - it may or may not work.

Thanks for your help!
