Beginners Corner > GY401 Setup Question #5 Zillion

I know..I know, everybody and their brother has a thread on 401 setup. Trust me I have looked at ALL of them, but none seem to have the answer to my question, so unfortunately I am forced to ask it.

I have a Hirobo Evo 50 with 401 and 9256 on the tail. I have setup the tail several times using the "eyeball" method. IE set all the links to 90, get the tail pitch slider in the center of travel, adjust limit pot on gyro so it doesn't bind at full deflection. I have the gain in the TX set at 70% and have gone all the way up to 90% and down to 30% but no matter what I seem to do I have to add 2 clicks of right trim into the tail to get it to hold. Now if I recall correctly adding trim to a heading hold gyro once initialized is considered bad. I make sure to wait until the gyro is fully initialized before spooling up or moving the heli and have tested all the links and everything is smooth and free. Do I need to resort to the "set it up in rate mode first" method in order to get rid of this or is the two clicks of trim acceptable?

Any chance you're getting vibration transmitted to the sensor by a tie wrap or tight wires?

What servo are you using? 9256 is a short pulse servo used with the 601 and 611

Well anything is possible Barracuda. I just went and looked at the it again, no tie wraps over the gyro and the wires are not tight at all.

Servo is a 9254..typo, my bad!

Is the gyro on the back with the plate? I had fits with mine when it was on the servo tray on top of a digital servo on the collective, I bought that gyro plate and stuck it behind the main shaft and problem solved.

Ridin in the back

Gyro is on the back on the plate. Recently reaffixed it due to some loose tape, but had same problem both before and after loose tape was fixed.

Engine is rich or you are judging drift while the heli is
on the ground.

I would be curious to see what happens if you set it up according to the manual for comparison

what ever way your tail is drifting try correcting it mechanicaly by adjusting the tail linkage

your gain should as high as possible without causing the tail to hunt (wag)

also on the gyro there is a delay adjust pot it should be set to 0

Depends on who you ask. You can set the gyro up with the tail pitch slider centered and the arm at 90 degrees and it will be fine. As for the gain, you only need enough to hold your tail well, anything more just heats up the servo for no reason.

Divot: I am judging drift when heli is in a hover. I am pretty sure the engine is running a little rich and this causes the tail to move in "jumps" when the engine burbles(for lack of a better word). This I can easily recognize and see and hear that everytime the engine skips a beat the tail twitches to a new position, however inbetween these twitches the tail continues to move to the right(nose left from behind heli) unless I put in about 2 clicks of right trim. The twitch due to richness I understand, it is the continued drift inbetween that I have a problem with.

An engine thats running rich is vibrating more.

Also its an EVO, did you dial indicate the start shaft?

mine never gets hot, a little warm maybe
have mine set to 87% locked in

if it's going to burn let it

Yes I did dial indicate the start shaft. It's runout is 1 thousandth, I was actually quite happy with the runout I really didn't have to do much messing around at all to get it to this.

The engine is a YS and I am just finishing up the 2nd gallon thru it so I am still working on leaning it out a little at a time but I really don't think it is rich enough or vibrating enough to cause the issue. As I am hovering if I look at the fuel in the tank I can see very little visible vibrations or movement in the fuel.

Use zeal tape. It solved my drift problem.

Man, I miss the eighties.

Depends on the store but near the tool section with the double sided tape

Also you will find all sorts of velcro straps

Don't forget most RC supplies started with a hardware store
