I see I started something here, but I assure you people Im not flying circuts or doing anything crazy. Just hovering it like 4 feet off the ground for practice, althought I took it up higher for that pic. I live in oregon where it's usually cold and not very fun to play outside, there aren't kids running around or anything. The only person out there most of the time is my dad.

ry_goody,

No problem, keep at it and have fun.

Now for my word of safety advice to you, although you sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders already. It's a good idea to have someone like your dad with you when you're flying, especially if you're flying where you are, but that also holds true even if you're at a field. You'll find that you concentrate so hard on flying the heli that you won't notice people around you until they're right on top of you. With someone there with you they can spot for you and keep an eye on what's going on. You'll find that helis are curiousity magnets. People have no idea what they are, like they've never seen a helicopter before, and will walk right up to them totally oblivious that they are dangerous. Or they'll come up behind you and then starting to ask you questions while you're flying. That can be quite a surprise if you didn't notice them there. Oh, by the way, some dogs think they're noisy frisbee's so be extra careful if there is a loose dog around.

Good job, keep up the good work.

Surprise!

or... "Please put your hands on your head and spread your legs"

Dragon brings up an excellent point! Flying alone sometimes can be dangerous for several reasons. Unfortunately most of the time I am alone because I work weekends when most of the model brotherhood (and sisterhood) is flying.

I was dialing in my first Freya at a closed naval flight line. A huge expanse of concrete with nobody around and easy access. While concentrating on my hover, trimming the heli about 30 feet up, I heard a loud horn blast. Sort of like the fire alarm horn in schools or offices. I thought maybe it was coming across the channel 300 yards away were a contractor refurbishes supply ships for the Navy... 5 seconds later another BLAST...extremely loud and forceful enough I could feel the sound waves from behind.

It was all I could do to keep my composure and land the heli safely. I landed very fast and hit the hold switch so I could lay the transmitter on the ground and hold my ears. When I bent over my butt hit, much to my surprise, a COP CAR!!!!.

I hit the throttle cut , turned around, and to a snickering cop said and I quote, knees shaking and heart racing, "Don't you ever do anything like that again! When you see someone flying a helicopter you need to wait or make yourself known before you approach them." He had pulled right up to the back of my legs and blasted that loud horn sound they use to move people the shoulder.

Well he proceeded to tell me I was not welcome there and the sign on the gate should have warned me. To make a long story short, there was no sign. He checked, I was right no sign, and told me to leave. I packed and left.

When your flying you cannot anticipate things you cannot see. Dogs running up (happened at an AMA field), Bee's buzzing around you, and Cop Cars blasting their attention siren at you to name a few. Spotters help you.

It was totaly my bad for not having a spotter (flying at the closed ramp is up for debate). Sometimes it is impractical to have someone there when you want to practice . Be prepared for the unexpected.

Cheers
Bert

Wow. Im glad I never posted any of my pics like that to take a thrashing from everone. Im a kid. We make mistakes. But to clear this up I see you must have a camera, so take a picture of where your standing and let eveone see the open area. No on a joking matter, what is dangerous is having Jason Krause's playing with a Vectron in a confined living room.

So how bout them lakers....

So how bout the weather outside, geesh.
Ha, we need to take it down a notch.

But I have to agree, I pay taxes (well my parents) but it doesn't gaurentee anything. If driving a car is a privilege that can be censored if misused, I would expect a ball of spinning danger is a bit of a responsibility and privilege. I sometimes fly in my backyard, but if there were other children in the nieghborhood and asked me not to fly, at least when people were outside, I would definitely honor her request. I would feel really bad if I hurt someone. Flying in your house is one thing, dangerous or not, it your stuff. Outside is public.

But I think a corona is fine, if respected and flown responsibly. Heck, me hitting lob wedges in my front yard is probably worse (or that time I hit a driver in my backyard, not a good idea).

What I am trying to say is, I dunno. Ok. Just no talking bad about each other. If theres one thing I hate, its grown men fighting. Look at that hockey dad, hes in jail (i think).

Freedom of Speach

Gang freedom of speech is a wonderful thing...but so is the freedom to ignore!

We all know what's right and what's wrong.

Guys like this would never come up to you and talk to your face the way they do online.

We all know what is being said is bad... so just let it be. He will keep on dogging people if you keep replying.

The best defense against this sort of banter is not to say anything.

Cheers Bert Garrison
