After doing some research into using A123s for reciever packs, i found that the nominal voltage they deliver is low enough to be used without a regulator. I had planned on using a 6.0V duralite reg with a 2s1p 2300mAh pack, but after doing some reading, i realized that the A123 pack would deliver slightly lower voltage than a fully charged 5cell NIcD which is all im using right now.

Is there any other reason to be running a regulator? an A123 pack delivers 6.6V, and my Gyro has been running fine on an unregulated 5 cell nicd, so i dont see there being a problem there.

Any Comments?

the gyro isn't the problem. The tail servo is. It all comes down on how hard you're flying and what tail servo you're using. Its not a big deal, just put a mini reg (5.2V) between the gyro and the tail servo

A freshly charged 5 cell pack will deliver nearly 7v. What servos are you using ?

A regulater also benefits in maintaining a constant voltage so servo performance does not alter as the pack discharges.

I am using 4 HS 7965MGs on the swash and throttle, and a logictech 6100 gyro and servo. im using the same gyro running off an Align 2in1 and have been for 170 flights now without a problem. the gyro and servo can handle it.

From what i understand is that the discharge curve is pretty flat on these packs already, and im not a hard 3D pilot, so the slight drop in performance will be imperceptable.

Futaba states that the 9254 servo be operated at no more than 5.8 volts. Use a step-down or a voltage regulator to keep it alive.

From what I know, 7965s are fairly resiliant servos, definately capable of supporting 6v operation, so given a realistic margin are probably OK on a freshly charged 5 cell pack but erring on the side of caution, I would seriously consider a regulator in the interests of longevity.
