ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A Pakistani legislator defended a decision by southwestern tribesmen to bury five women alive because they wanted to choose their own husbands, telling stunned members of parliament this week to spare him their outrage.
"These are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them," Israr Ullah Zehri, who represents Baluchistan province, said Saturday. "Only those who indulge in immoral acts should be afraid."
The women, three of whom were teenagers, were first shot and then thrown into a ditch.
They were still breathing as their bodies were covered with rocks and mud, according media reports and human rights activists, who said their only "crime" was that they wished to marry men of their own choosing
Zehri told a packed and flabbergasted parliament Friday that Baluch tribal traditions helped stop obscenity and then asked fellow legislators not to make a big fuss about it.
Many stood up in protest, saying the executions were "barbaric" and demanding that discussions continue Monday. But a handful said it was an internal matter of the deeply conservative province.
"I was shocked," said Nilofar Bakhtiar, who pushed for legislation calling for perpetrators of so-called honour killings to be punished when she served as minister of women's affairs under the last government.
"I feel that we've gone back to the starting point again," she said. "It's really sad for me."
The incident allegedly occurred one month ago in Baba Kot, a remote village in Jafferabad district, after the women decided to defy tribal elders and arrange marriages in a civil court, according to the Asian Human Rights Commission.
They were said to have been abducted at gunpoint by six men, forced into a vehicle and taken to a remote field, where they were beaten, shot and then buried alive, it said, accusing local authorities of trying to hush up the killings.
One of perpetrators was allegedly related to a top provincial official, it said.

Disgusting, but it does illustrate the mentality of some of the people we are trying to deal with over there, and even worse, some of them are over here now also.

Yeah, but they have dirty nukes, not the new clean kind that more modern counties such as the US has. Prolly not the best thing. And if it came to conventional, Pakistan aint no slouch, but India would definitely kick its butt. India has a Bluewater navy, and Aircraft carriers and stuff...and pakistan has a couple of patrol boats,,,be kinda like AUS v US without nukes,,,(our new subs have ya cold, but subs dont hold land do they)

^ This i can live with... but what would i do next time i need to speak to a support line about my dodgy net connection Right there id draw the line

But the honour killings are a just a sign of the backward way of life, of those people. Must suck living in the 21st century, but living under rules made up by some bozo centuries ago.

That is unbelievable and so sad.

I hesitate to ever reply to any of these topics in hopes to never get "sucked in" but this is just so sad.

I have grown up seeing woman bow their heads down and little girls too when I walk by...simply because I am a guy. It would just make me so mad. I remember once walking in and a 70 year old woman bowed her head down and did not say anything to me..I was maybe 17 a that time. I asked my sister and she told me "just to move on." Later I realized it and wondered how hard her life must be, how she probably grew up simply because some guy made some rules or his nuts were not big enough.

I told myself I would never have my girl do that...but then I was lucky and came from a very strong mother and a father that also wanted the same. We as an entire family broke that cycle as well as many others that... simply don't help or work. Trust me, most of us just want to live our lives like everyone else. Peaceful.

I think what most of us should think is how can the remaining part of Pakistan get away when they are held down like this and examples made. When so called "top officials" say this type of behavior is fine. NOT so much that they are all crazy killers. Just like over here most would just like to live their lives. But there are sections that are just nuts and control most of the stuff. Imagine if the punishment for DUI was being shot and buried alive, no questions asked...how many of you would take that chance? How many of you do now? How many of you would be willing to stand up for it?

Many of these people can't stand up for themselves; they don't have food or clean water...let alone cloths for their kids. Heck they can't even protest they don't want to be forcibly married.

What if I told you if you went there and "checked out some chicks" you have the potential of being beaten and killed. Are you ready to go? My point is it is hard to stand up when you are too scared even when the rule is simply "stupid" but very easy to judge.

I know today I went to McDonalds just to get a diet coke because it is so good...but I never worried if I would have the money, food, water, cloths or if my family would get killed today. It is different over there and many places. People are fighting completely different problems that many of us simply can't imagine.. have never seen.

Government breakdowns, religion issues (some want to go back 1000s of years, others want to move forward), honor killings, stoning, leader that live in 50,000 sq. foot marble mansions while their villagers are starving. Food that is not safe or available and water that is not clean. Live like that and see how far you get. How much extra time and energy you have to fight or make things "right." People do here because their bellies are full.

People are still fighting over there to make it better, Exactly what many write here for them to do... that is what those girls where doing, trying to make an old "idea" die...but they lost their lives doing it. Instead of thinking that "everyone should nuke each other" which is about the stupidest answer anyone can give maybe educate yourself a bit more on the problem, get past CNN, and try to figure out how you could help.

Ask yourself how lucky you are.. When people don't have food, one penny, cloths, they do "unfortunately" turn to religion...which in this case sure does not seem to be turning them in the right direction. But again we probably only hear the loudest 10% of the population.

Just like you had no choice when bush sent many Americans to war, or to pay your taxes for it, regardless if you think it is justifiable ..many of those people simply don’t have control of their lives either. Luckily here though you can protest, you can march, you have sections of groups that will listen to you. In fact here we have probably "to much of that."

Lets be thankful we have the privilege to live here.

Very sad and honest post. It brings thoughts about how relative everything is in this world.

i don't think this will be the case for too long in this country the way things are going right now. Cold war is coming and it will end freedom and prosperity not only in Russia, but in US as well.
