Will there ever be helical gears for the 500? Is it even worth it?

Align didn't sell many helical gears for the 600e in the first place and the 500 isnt that loud in the first place. Helical only make it quieter.

really, i dont think so.
helical cut gears are not only quieter, but more efficient too. it would be a hot seller i think. no real cost difference than changing a pinion. why wouldnt they?

No, not more efficient. I guess you could say they are more efficient because they have more teeth but you still have to change the pinion to use it regardless.

I think a hot seller for Align would be Mod 1 gears.

yes, helical gears are more efficient, as well as quieter due to many more teeth being engaged at once. I'm not sure whether it would make a significant difference on the 500, but they technically are more efficient by design

Helical gears are NOT more efficient, only quiter.
As there is more gear area engaged, there is more friction and there are more power transmission loses.
That's why regular cars use helical gears in the gearbox (noise), while competition cars use straight gears (performance).

MOD 1 - I third that! Perhaps we should start a new topic aimed at Align - would they listen?

Most literature states that helical gears are the same efficiency as spur gears, 98-99%, but, most helical gears are made with more precision than spur gears (especially in applications like ours, where the user is apt to set up the spur gear either too loose or too tight and kills their efficiency. Therefore, in most applications, helical gears end up being quieter, and more efficient IN USE.

Mod 1 is bigger teeth.

I think the TRex 600 staright gears are mod 0.7 and the helicals are 0.6?

Mod 1? What other helis (Especially one Align copied in the first place (copied the head geometry but put the flybar in the wrong place so effectively the mixer arms were the wrong way up) and has a dinosour name) DOES have mod 1 gears?

Helical gears have thrust loads, don't like reversing loads, and typically lower loading. Spur or straight gears don't have these problems. Bearings would have to be done differently. With a plastic gear in the mix, I doubt the helical would be any quieter.

Mikado has solve this problem with a V-shape gear.
