Not that its ever been an issue for me, but it would be nice to double my run time while keeping the stock battery and charger. No special charging or discharging to worry about. One thing I like about the stock pack is you don't have to worry if you accidentally leave your Rx on.

Before modification: Total draw from the battery pack was 280mA , 3.14 Watts. Runtime was measured to be 2 hours 19 minutes.

After modification: Total draw from the battery pack was 123mA, 1.38 Watts . Runtime was measured to be 5 hours 33 minutes.

Those numbers are for DX6 but this user had similar results on a DX7.

Current consumption is now 136 m/a ( but remember I have fitted a LED "ON" warning beacon also, so this accounts for some of that ) - before the mod it was 288 m/a.

Those linear regulators aren't very efficient.

So, I wonder, what did they do to make the DX6i so easy on batteries?

7 hours with a 2500mah pack is good, but I get way more than that from 4 1500mah AA NiMhs.

Maybe the DX6 and 7 have a higher power output...?

The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.

so whats the trick?

The "trick" is replacing the el-cheapo linear voltage regulator with a switching voltage regulator.

Kinda reminds me of the old Peavey preamp and mixing board tricks we used back in the bar band days.

The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.

The DX6i's 4 AA cells will result in less wasted power, (4.8v dropped to 3.3v is only 1.5v drop). This will make the linear voltage regulator a much more efficient proposition.
