I have a Dell XPS with Windows Vista and have recently been getting the blue screen of death. I've had the computer since January without problems. Within the last couple of days I've been getting this. It seems like it has only started up since Windows manually installed a massive update. Not sure if it's just a coincidence or if it is a culprit. Basically, I have no idea what it means or why it's been doing it. I've been hesitant to call Dell because it's extremely difficult to work with them in my opinion. Thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

on the blue screen it should tell what has the error like, BAD_POOL_CALLER or something like that. Could also be something in the eventlog to help.

What deetee said and since its a Dell, throw it away and have someone build you a nice computer if you can't. Whoops just noticed its a laptop, don't want to build one of those its not cost effective at all.

I never had issues with my old laptop with XP. Not too sure why Microsoft had to go in a completely different direction from XP. Seemed to be one of the more stable OS they've had.

Go to Dell and put in your service tag and request online chat. I have repaired servers and pc's with them on a chat screen.

Some of the vista updates will include generic hardware drivers andmy gateway laptop did the same thing until I did a restore and it was the wired network card driver. if your hardware works, don't update drivers from MS's website. Vista is a funny animal indeed.....

No honey I got that used.... MAAC#73745

How much ram do you have running Vista? You may just get by putting the Vista disk in and see if it will let you repair it!

I have 3 gigs of RAM. I'll look into getting with Dell and trying an online chat with them.

What model XPS is it? I second going on their website, typing in your service tag, and using the online chat. It's actually very helpful. Much better than talking over the phone.

NOT POSSIBLE

There IS NO "Blue screen of death" with Vista. The STOP software code now presents a WHITE Screen of Death.

If you're getting the BSD with Vista, it's probably a virus pretending to be a BSD.

It just happened again. It gave me this code: 0xxDEADDEAD or something similar to that. Then the computer restarted itself and when Windows loaded it gave me a prompt saying that "windows just recovered from an unexpected shutdown" and it was checking for a solution. Weird.

It's a "manually initiated crash" error from the Windows driver development kit.

Probably a mismatched driver or bad hardware.

What's the best way to go about fixing it? Just doing the online support with Dell? I'm not all that computer savvy.

The XPS 1530 is very touchy when it comes to using NON Dell specific drivers, especially video (ask me how I know)...

They will help solve the blue screening

Bull$hit hardware/driver problems will give you a blue screen every time. Im getting them right now as im overclocking and trying to find that sweet spot. Runs stable on the desktop and 3dmark06 is fine but when testing with prime95 i get a BSOD (CPU @ 3.91GHZ @ max voltage) time to bring it down a notch i guess, i was hoping to keep it above 3.9ghz

most likely you had a driver update that is causing the problem. easiest thing to do is revert back to before this all happened.

i agree. complete BS about no BSOD in vista.

if possible get the stop code and google it, you will find the culprit i would wager.

another quick thing you can try is a system restore back to the last time it worked ok.

cheers
