| I don't know what your predominant lawn grass is. It looks like perrenial rye grass. It might also be a Fescue-type grass.
The truth is, that with any grass other than St. Augustine, you need to apply a PRE-EMERGANT herbicide in the early spring, while the law is still brown. This will stop the crabgrass and other weed seeds from developing. Hence the term "pre-emergant". You need to first determine the exact grass you have, I am not familiar with northern varieties. You must make sure the stuff you use won't hurt the good grass. Regular crabgrass killer just plain sucks. Once the crabgrass is going you are allready screwed. You have to nip it while it is in seed form. St. Augustine is so agressive it chokes out weeds, but it won't grow up north and it is very water hungry.
