Just got my Tower Hobbies Super Saver news. On the back page they list new helicopter servo's The Eh3016 (BrushlessHeli F3C) the EH3017 Brushless Helicopter 3D Servo. Are they rebranding the BLS servos to cover up with their debacle that they had with them or did they realize they had a problem and decide to come out with heli dedicated servos'

It's the BLS253 according to their site.

The number you posted is the tower part number:
BLS253 Server - Part number EH3017

I haven't read much about these, what is the big debacle with them.

In typical Futaba / Tower fashion, they are listed at $145 each. Not exactly made for the masses...

The BLS253 is essentially a BLS451 with a lead long enough for most helicopter applications. The BLS451 was and still is fine for helicopter use. The servo was never a problem. Hooking it up to a POS, substandard, underspec regulator system IS a problem.

The BLS252 is essentially a brushless version of the 9255 with more torque, except that it is even smoother in flight, as is the case with all of the BL servos. I've flown a set for several months. They're marvelous.

I found it interesting that Futaba has now come out with specific servo's after all the posts that were on here and other forums concerning the BLS servo's.

Why the major price difference? A servo lead alone is no reason for that much price difference.

I can see where you might draw that conclusion, except that those servos have been in the pipeline in Japan since well before the feeding frenzy over the BLS451.

If I bought a $3000 Caliber 90 tomorrow, I would trust the BLS451's in it. Period.

Well, I just put a set of 451s in my Caliber 90

The short leads are nice!

IIRC, the "debacle" was a slip by the Hobbico Marketing folks, and had nothing to do with the performance of the servo.

Ben, and those of you who have also used these new BLS252's, do they center as well as the 9255's? I like the fact that they have more torque than the 9255's. I'm considering making the switch.

Ditto!

BLS 252's are fantastic, using them now in my Caliber. I've used the 451's in my Freya EX2 (and in my Caliber until I got 252's to test) since last year with NO problems... on 4 cell ni-cad/ni-mh high capacity packs.

Cliff;

I think you and I are the only ones still flying with a four cell pack! I use RC2400's. Works better than any voltage regulator.

Cliff or Ben, do either of you have access to a way to check the deadband of the BLS451 vs the BLS252? All Fut digital servos I've tested to date have a deadband of 1uS or less if "helicopter specific", meaning a 2 in the model number. Ex: 9252, 9255, BLS251.

All other servos not containing a 2 in that part of the number sequence are 2uS DB. If the BLS253 is as stated, a long lead version of the BLS451, then it will have the wider and less heli-friendly deadband of 2uS.

With the current popularity of eCCPM, the servo deadband is more important than ever since the servo travel is split between two functions. Resolution is halved which then means a 2uS DB is equivalent to a 4uS DB from a servo in an mCCPM heli setup. I'm about to buy some BLS252s (FAI spec) and they too should be 1uS or tighter. If you own a specialized servo tester (I have the Hitec HFP-10 servo programmer) or set the trim step to 1 on the 14MZ, deadband is easily checked. Trim Step of 1 is less than 1uS per beep, I can't currently measure how much less.

Thanks,
Steve

Servo Update...

OK, with a new BLS252 in my hands, I tested its deadband at 1uS, completely following my experience of the servo numbering system of the 2's (2XX, etc). Also purchased some S9156 digitals for a big heli project and yup, 2uS deadband as expected.

I'm disproving that assumption. Yes, I only checked out the 252 but I'll bet the 253 is 1uS deadband, same as the 252. So no, they're not just different in leads (or labels).

And I'm betting the control loop is set up differently between the 3D BLS253 and FAI BLS252 as well.

Honestly, though I was told the info about the lead from a Futaba Japan employee (IE is wasn't hearsay), I'm very pleased if they did indeed further tighten the deadband on the BLS253 over the 451 for a heli application.

Ben;

I am sure they are excellent servos BUT I think the $149 price is not justified since they are essentially the same servo as the BLS451. This is price gouging like CP 30%.

It is a steep price indeed - but gouging it is not.
You have many other options - you do not have to buy this servo (I'm sure most won't at this price).

CP30 on the other hand is gouging since we don't have any other options at the moment.

Since the Japanese pay the same price for the BLS451 and BLS252,253, I think we should also. Am I missing some business principal here ?
