I am putting together a 50 size heli with an OS 50 Hyper, GY401 gyro and futaba servo for the tail....I have 4 spektrum ds821 that came with my dx-7 radio, should I use these servos or use something else and use just one of these for the throttle?

from what im seeing these are a bad choice.....thanks for all the input....now what would you recommend? and would the spektrum 6100 receiver work ok or should i use the 7000

Don't use them anywhere in a 50, they are prone to failures from vibration.

JR warns against using them in anything bigger than a 30 size nitro.

+1 to 'Cuda. DS821s are bad for helis in general. Use something else.

i run ds 821 on throttle only for about 60 flights.. got hs 82MG on now...

rather spend $20 and buy MG servo than spend $ 40+ on blades alone for crashed heli

They're great servos for planks however for helis, is
a crash waiting to happen. (Don't do it)

If you look up the term "JUNK" in Helicopter R/C Dictionary--
It Clearly States:
"Those who use JR DS821 servos shall crash the helo horrifically"

Throw them away or give them to a planker!
DO not put them in your helo if you care about it.....

Although I would not recommend using them on a 50...

a local guy that I used to fly with had them on his Raptor 90 and never had a problem. Of course we called him crazy Dave for a reason!

I would hide in the nearest solid structure if I saw him fire up a 90 with those servos.

Good theory but not so much in practice.

The spline strips off the top of the output gear, and the amplifier dies.

well, I have a (1) DS821 on my throttle (have not flown it yet),, the 821 uses the same gears as the 811 and 8101 (no problem with their gears),, so I will NOT worry about the gears,,

BUT,, the gears on the net for the 821 are gray yet my 821 came with white gears,,, I want to be safe so I just called Horizon and I was told they may have changed the color, but I would more likely bet they found the Spline to brake at times so they changed to use the 8101 white gears,, Horizon also said newbies have used Locktite on the servo screws and this makes the Spline bridal,,

now,,, I asked about the amplifier "if there has been reports of it failing" I was told no, and if it was a bad amplifier they would have issued a warning,,

my friend has been flying JR servos for about 20 years, I talked to him about the new 821 and he said he has only seen 2 JR servos fail in all the time he has been flying them,, SO I have to wonder how many newbies use this 821 servo and have binding, binding (as most of you know) will fail a servo,,

no binding on mine, but god I hope mine doesn't fail LOL

Good luck, I've seen several that sheared right off clean with the output gear. One of them was on a 46 size airplane with one servo on each aileron.

They specifically warn users not to use them on 50 size nitros. Do a search.
