Somewhere I recall seeing an on-board tachometer for heli's with a big enough LCD display to read it in a hover. Anybody know where I can get one of these? Raja, I thought it was you. . .

This one may be overkill but it's loaded with features.

Voltmeter

Mine is a voltmeter that I provide with the Jewel for people upon request. Use the gv-1 as a tach, set your speed then turn it on and off in flight to verify throttle curves (listen for no change in rpms). Doesn't have to be perfect, if you hear no change, you're good enough.

Totally unnecessary but wouldn't it be cool..

..to interface an onboard tach with those (overpriced) blades that LED a name etc.. smaller ones on the tail rotor?.. and have then flick through rpm, flight pack status etc.. a winning gizmo if one could knock em out cheap enough..

Hi Pgkevet

Check this out

On the perimeter of the rotor disq
Drehzahl is german for rpm.

I knew it'd be cool.. 690 blade price almost less than I expected (but more than I'm willing to pay until I can guarantee to come away with them intact )

Sure the look coole, and it seems that they work fine,
a bit fancy for my taste, but they are smart.

For ajusting max col. pitch I still prefere a tach,
and it works at allmost any distance. I read that
your helpers have had differend readings with the tach,
try to explaine them how it works.
In my opinion it`s the best tool for setting up/checking
rotor rpm (max coll. pitch)

I think they found it intellectually challenging. I was going to train my dog to do it.. figured he'd be better at it but he complains his paws can't work the rocker switch smoothly enough

Going to try Raja's governor method..going for about 1650 headspeed in normal and idle 1 just to start and while this engine runs in fully.. then fine it down to three different speeds later..

"I think they found it intellectually challenging"
That`s life when it`s best.

"Going to try Raja's governor method.."
I like that as well, for ajusting the throttle curve,
in case the GV-1 fails.
You can allso read the max rpm on the gv-1 after flight
for ajusting the max coll. pitch.
I like my tach anyway

BTW an increase in headspeed needs a small breakin period,
like when you go from 1650 to ex. 1750 remember to run it richer
( if you had it on the sweet spot at 1650) allso richer than the sweet spot for 1750.

Hey, bringing back memories with that photo!

So tape the airplane tach to the airframe instead of a stick pointing upwards and voila, you'll have an on-board tach!

Ya know, I've been there and done that - the problem was engine vibration. The tach would be scattered all over the map, and when it did lock-in, it was reading twice the actual speed as I recall.

I appreciate the ideas though, keep 'em coming.
