...some of you seem quite casual about shooting autos.. whereas I make no pretence about doing one deliberately (yet).

I was forced into my third necessary one (600E - 100-150 feet up and some 70yds away) when the motor sheared and almost got away with it but misjudged the flare with too much pitch and managed a boomstrike on landing...boom and one blade

I do practice these on the sim but the costs with a gasser justify me asking if any of you have any hints or tips..would be appreciated..

Learning them on the sim is a great place to start of course, but you should start doing a few with your real helio. They don't act the exact same way. the set up is diffrent between the sim and the real thing. You need to know how your bird will act in the event you end up forced in to a no s@#t auto for one reason or another. My last 1/2 tank are autos to the ground. What I did when I first learned was power on autos to a hover then went into reduced power autos then finaly a full out auto all the way down. That helped keep my nerves trimed down so I wouldn't be shaking before I hit the switch and shut it down.

Get your day of flying in then before calling it a day do a few.

..did you setup a different idle curve for the practice?

Yes
I used my Idle up 1 as a moddfied normal. I set the TH curve to give me a solid 10 foot hover but no more. Did not mess with the PT curve from the normal mode. This allowed a loss of in flight power but enough power left to make a recovery if needed.

It's a good idea to practice autos so when the need happens it won't be done in a panic situation. You will enjoy some easy ones if you start with a few from a hover. Just learning where the switch is and what to expect is a big relief. Your gasser has so much blade inertia you can just hit the hold switch and add some collective as it floats to the ground. When you try it from a good 50+ feet make sure you are moving foward so there is a slope not just a drop. Drop the collective stick to just under zero about 2 or 3 degrees neg and it will just fly down the slope and pull back slightly on the elev. to flare and you are going to remember how it feels from the hover height. Using the bigger bladed bird to learn on might be expensive but it will auto better than a little one. I love to shoot autos with a 600E. Maybe you might use it for a few first. TimT

...thanks for the advice guys.. any more truly welcome.

There was absolutely zero wind for me to try and nose into and worse the field was waist-high weeds with a narrow mown bit under 'my incident'... so choices were poor..

I have been trying to learn autos on the sim for the last year or so and still do not feel comfortable in bringing one to the ground on my real bird. I am in your shoes in I have had several times where something happens and I am forced to auto. I have saved it more than I have lost it due to my sim practice I believe. My last real auto was due to the screw coming out of my tail hub you can imagine how fast it started to spin I flipped it into TH and autoed it down with only a broken vertical tail fin. I have practiced autos with my real heli but I usually bail out of TH when I get within 15ft of the ground. Alot of it was to just get used to flipping the switch so if I screw up I wont freak out and forget to flip out of TH. I would say they are a must to learn but be careful come up with a gameplan and don't rush into them and kill one of your gassers in the process kill the rex its cheaper to fix.

Its not a maneuver until your looking down on it. ~Jason Krause~ Phoenix FF 08
