Gasser Model RC Helicopters > g23 help question

hello, i have a xcell gasser with g23, total of about 7 tanks ran, all hovering(admitted still scared), my last hover flight ended with the engine cutting out but did not die, above mid throttle, bought her down, started it again fine, mid throttle about 3 feet after take off, engine sputtered, again brought it down, checked plug it looked dark, very light oil on it, so i thought maybe the plug fouled, so bought the ngk bmr7a plug, gap at .022, started the engine fine, attempt to lift off, again the engine sputtered, but did not die still idling fine, checked plug it was dark again, using 1 1/8(high), 1 3/8(low), did make minute adjustment on the high and low, but still sputterdright after lift off, the only thing that i did before this happen was i refueled the gas container with 89 octane(1 gallon) and 64:1(2oz) amsoil mix, i did have about 1 tankful left on the old gas left in the container than added the new gas with oil mix, i have ruled that the plug, high and low settings would not affect trying to mid throttle, could the coil be going bad, took the air cleane off and ran it without with no difference,i did take the carb(walbro 176a) apart to clean, blew the ports with air compressor, the metal screen did have a thin film of light green slime, i put the carb back, one thing i did notice was the fuel inlet, when i blew into it was obstructed, so i took the carb apart again, blew thru the inlet, air came out fine, till i put the gasket and plate, then it was onbstructed again, any help or suggestion or is that normal.

I would start at the tank, and clean everything again.

I agree with AL, as it sounds like a fuel draw problem. You are running the same fuel oil mix as I am running and very simular carb settings. The fuel inlet will apear plugged if you are blowing INTO it, as there is a pressure regulator inside the carb.

The fact that the plug is always oily, however, may be telling a different story and that would be ignition. If you have friends that are flying the same heli locally, I believe a coil swap would be in order, if for nothing else but elimination.

Another thing I would do is run an additional fuel filter between the tank and the carb. They are a lot easier to clean than the carb. Hope this helps.

thanks for the reply and advice, i will clean out the tank and replaced clunk line, plug used to be light brown/tan, till this problem started, is the pressure regulator only working when fuel is present, should air be able to pass thru the fuel inlet into the carb, when blown thru, while carb is full throttle open? thanks,, just a thought that this could be the problem, after the cleaning the tank and problem still exist, might have to get a friend with his coil to test. thanks,,

The way the carb works is there is a diaphram type pump on the side of the carb where the fuel enters powered by pulses from the crank case. There is a needle and seat after the screen filter between that side of the carb and the other side that is held closed by a spring, and that spring set needle is the pressure regulator. It is concievable that the regulator needle is gummed up in the open position which would cause flooding and would turn the plug black and wet.

You can remove the needle and spring if you remove the plate, gaskets, and primer bulb from that side of the carb. You will see the spring under a small plate held down with one screw. Hope this helps.

steve, i have already taken that and the whole carb apart, and seems excellent inside, checked diaphram, no cracks, leaks, etc.will go back in and check regulator needle. so fuel is able to flow thru only when fuel exist in the carb? is there any way to check to see if coil is operating correctly with ohm/voltmeter?
thanks,

You can check a coil with an ohm meter, however it may check good and still break down under heat/vibration/voltage. The only way to check a coil for shure, with out running it with a scope attached, is to replace it and see if that fixes the problem. Hope this helps.

I don't know if this is applicable, but I had a problem with my engine also. It drove me nuts why it would seem to run fine, and all of a sudden sputter and almost die.

I found out by running it tied the heli down to a heavy bench outdoors, and when it was loaded up I crawled under it to play with the needle valve (I thought it was a mixture problem). Much to my suprise, I noticed the choke lever moving !!! Even though it appeared to be "tight", when under load the choke was swinging closed. When I put a rubber band on the lever, my problems ended......

I hope it is this simple for you.... Todd
