Here is some good stuff.

With helis there is also translational lift in addition to the lift generated by the individual blades... but I will leave that for a future discussion 'cause it is dinner time.

but, can you apply the same physics to rc helicopters that you apply to airplanes? man, your talking WAY over my head. Im gonna have to invoke "unfair" pretentious collective reasoning. therefor, i'm not responsible for any thing said in this thread. too bad too, cause it looked like i was getting ready to be wrong, i think. the statement was " the trex will hover nicely at 6 to 7 degrees" I was merely trying to get across that you would be hovering at 5 degrees, and flying at 6 to 7 degress. all the rest of the statements were from personal experiance, wait till we get to the feild next time BTW.

Sorry, did not mean to be pretentious.
Yes, the physics of an airfoil are the same whether it is a wing or a spinning airfoil.
It always takes more pitch to hover than to fly in forward flight.
The reason for that is translational lift.
http://www.helicopterflight.net/tra...onal%20lift.htm
As the rotor disk begins to move through the air (or as wind blows across the disk) not only is each blade developing lift, but the entire rotor disk begins to function as a wing (think frisbee) and that creates even more lift. As the heli accelerates forward into flight the heli will tend to climb, this forces the pitch to be reduced to maintain a constant altitude. Conversely as the heli slows from forward flight into a hover the pitch must be increased or the heli will start to descend.
I love aerodynamics... and I would not lie to you

I just noticed we are neighbors
Are you going to the funfly this coming weekend at the Tulsa Glue Dobbers field? It is an airplane thing... so I will probably only be there briefly.

oh, i cant complain about fact, i was just assuming the range of rpms we are talking about, 1700-2000rpm. alot of the pitch ranges we are dealing with, would have to be closer tolerances for rc heli's than big airplanes. i think the only part that i was wrong in, was saying that you take off at +5 degrees exactly. I agree that at a certain pitch setting, the rpm would affect the lift to a degree, but in our rc world of helicopters, there is too big a range of rpms that you would have to be dealing with, to where the pitch setting would make that big a difference. Yeah, i thought about going to watch the big boys crash the expensive airplanes for a change, at gludobbers. I wish they would let us fly somewhere this week end though. I may have to go before friday to get my fix in.

well, to top it off, you know the majority of them are slimmers in the first place! let alone the addition of fixed wings.

you know there's gonna be alot of people trying to impress everyone, and just think how much ground the big airplanes will cover when splintered and thrown about. Kinda makes your nips hard, just thinking about it,huh.
