Now this popped up on a RR members gallery here, but he hasn't been online since November. Is it just me, or is this guy nuts!?!?? Learning to fly a freaking 90 on a suburban street! What would happen if some kid ran up to it or he had a lockout and hit a house! This is worse than that video of that guy flying a 50 in a playground a while back!

you don't know the guy, and you weren't there.

you don't know how far away the photographer is from the helicopter, he could be using mad zoom for all we know. Can't put any fault there, cuz we dont know.

As for being in the street, I don't see any traffic or pedestrians.
He's ok there.

The camera man doubles as a spotter. The camera man might have enough sense to keep curious onlookers at a distance.
He's ok there.

he's more of a nuisance noise wise to his neighbors, but then again, its not much different than a weed eater or a lawnmower, or the LOUDEST of them all, a leaf blower.
For all we know, his neighbor could be the camera man.

It could be the middle of the afternoon on a weekday. everyone is at work, so he isnt bothering anybody. All the kids could be at school, so he doesnt have to worry about kids. We just don't know.

If we all said we have never done a test hop in the street or in the driveway, most of us would be lying.

Don't cut the guy's head off.

hey
Sure it isn't the most ideal place to fly a 90 but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do

Thanks

The camera man is close to the helicopter all right. We see a picture from the front and from the side - this means that he was probably close to the helicopter. otherwise, he would have to walk a lot from one point to the other to get this. I don't know the rules in the US, but in Isreal, you cannot fly helicopters unless it is at least 1000 feet far from a populated area. the training gears are what makes it look scary.

I would say 'F' in safety.

You don't mess with the ofir...

What it?......... When my Marines play that safety what if game I have a nice little saying for them.

What if my Sister had a DICK? She'd be my brother! We'll she doesn't and she's not so shut the f*&k up and listen to what I'm saying. We can play the what if game all day long and not accomplish anything.

Bottom line. We aren't there. We don't know his ability or lack there of. He made the call, he's responsible for the outcome. I personally will hover my 90 in the street with the neighborhood kids sitting on the porch 100ft away no second thoughts. If they stand up, I shut it off. I damn sure wont do circuits with it. My trex 450 is a little different. I'll fly it around a little if no one is outside. Nothing crazy but if it goes into someones car or house.

1. It'll scare the heck out of someone, I'm responsible for that
2. Any damage I'm financially responsible for.
3. Any and all fights that it causes in the hood, I have to live with.

If you can deal with the consequences....... You can fly where ever you want. Just ensure you put checks and ballances in there for safety. Evaluate the risk, put in some control measures and ask yourself are they acceptable risks now?

Fly as required. When required.
Look at the JK video of the 500 in his front yard!!

Ohh... no... not again...

Well for the pic's and the video I can mention a few things:

Lock-out
Battery fail
Bad connection in cable and/or contacts
Servo fault
Gyro fault
Mechanic fault
Unforeseen happening from your "good" desired flying environment
Other nasty incidents I didn’t mention above

I think we always must remember that we are remotely controlling objects with a lot of energy loaded and ready for destruction.

No more dangerous than you driving your car down the interstate. Alot more inertia involved in that AND you can't control what others do. You don't have to treat it as if it's a loaded weapon with the weapon off safe and it pointed at your head. It's a relatively safe hobby. Yes heli's can kill you, so can a bee sting. Doesn't mean it's going to happen or it's just a matter of time. Fly within your skill level, where you can safely control the outcome. If the dude in that pic has rules in his mind of I'm only hovering six inches or less or I'm dumping the collective. The radious for destruction is pretty small. Well if he's at 20ft the cone of destruction is a heck of alot bigger and in some cases would be too much to justify. It's his call. The pics don't show spectators so lets not assume there are some.

In God we trust, everyone else we monitor.

Alright, I figured out the guy in the picture, his user is "RyDogg".
He's in Cincy, OH. He's a firefighter. Sounds like a good guy.
check out his post history, he's only got like 16 of them, so it shouldn't take you long to read them all.

He was smart and humble enough to come onto RR and ask for help. It was his first helicopter by the sound of it.
Also looks like some guys in the Cincy area met up with him and helped him out. Thats cool.
I doubt the guy is still dinking around in the street trying to get his heli dialed in, which btw was in April 2007 when he was doing so.

None of you know the guy, none of you were in the neighborhood to analyze the whole situation for yourself, and the guy isnt even around to defend himself.

I say cut the bashing.

Oh, and BTW, it's a 60, not a 90.

This is worse than that video of that guy flying a 50 in a playground a while back!

The guy in the video at the playground was completely surrounded by people, many of them kids. He was also clearly all over the place.
I think thats quite a bit different than tweaking out some bugs on a new heli on an unbusy street in front of the house.

he is (was) a noob. What do noobs do when they get in trouble? The slam the throttle/ collective down.
Battery/ lockout, etc... Well lets hope he has a fail safe set.
No big deal.

something worse? the helicopter is HOVERING a few inches off the ground. It's not like it's going to fly away and hit something. Thats something airplanes do, not helicopters.
Remember, we have a hard enough time making these things fly when we ARE controlling them.

Remember these are a whole bunch of WHAT IF's!!

Definitely not "worse" like you say.

I agree, skating it around the street isn't even the same sport as flying at a playground surrounded by kids. I say skate it around the street all you want. Have fun. Be safe.

dealing with the consequences??

Not saying that the guy is crazy and should be put to jail, but I can't agree with some of the comments stating that it's all right. It is not good nor safe practice to fly in your street. You may be ready to deal with the consequences of your acts, but it is very likely that the people you may inflict damage to are NOT. Having your heli running into something that's insured is something, but injuring someone is very different.
And it is not the same as driving down the interstate : you need a licence to drive a vehicule that was built and certified by professionals, not put together and wired by an enlighted hobbyist.
I did slice a kid's leg following a radio failure : the "spotter" was looking at the heli, and even though all the kids were supposed to be at school, this one decided that being on the path of my runaway BBS Stork was better. Wooden blade went right through the calf, stopped by the bone. Not nice!!!

It's not because the name of the guy that flys his raptor inverted in front of his neighbours (and destroys it with an RC buggy ) is Jason Krause that it makes it ok...

Not saying that we should be paranoid and only fly in deserts, but I think it's best if the message we send to beginners is "play it safe" rather than "yeah go ahead, accident never happen".

Its probably safer in the street than at the air field . You get hit by planes at air field and there is more distractions also the street could be a dead end .

I dont know how to fly just how to not crash !!!!!

emag ,
not to burst your bubble but could you please cut all the 'oh how about this for safety' cr@p? starting to annoy my ar$e off, reading all your copy-cat (and that's what they are) comments in safety bashing threads.

Let everyone think up themselves what is safe and what is not, and if they can't judge a situation well enough, they are mentally challenged (imo).
