Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > Switchglow: not enough glow

Hi, I have the switch glow plugged into the mix port on a GV1 gov. I'm using a separate Batt from the rx batt as it's in a scale heli with retracts and lights. The batt is a 4.8v not very old batt 6 months maybe rx batt and fully charged. the buzzer on the SG is doing it's thing fine but there’s not enough power to make the plug glow enough to start the motor. its' glowing a little but not enough.

Any suggestions? should I get a 6v Batt.

If I remember correctly, the switchglo is supplied in two versions. One for 4.8V and the other 6V+. Not sure which one you have.

What I don't understand is how and why u're using a separate battery from the rx... the mah used by the switchglow are really low. It has no practical impact on battery capacity.

Reason for 2 batts is just with scale helis and retracts If the retracts get stuck it could posibly drain the rx batt very fast which would not be ideal in flight. So I just put all accessories on another batt. I bought the switch glow from someone else it had not been used but maybe it is a 6v version which would explain my problem.

I would get in touch with switchglo and see if they can help you out. I have two of them myself and they have been working flawlessly. I'm very impressed with them. Not only as a glow igniter but also as a locator (already used them twice for that purpose) and more importantly as an instant fail save detection device (I programmed the switchglo channel to go live if fail save should occur). If something wierd happens to your bird in flight and you hear the beep, you experienced failsafe. If you don't hear anything, it was probably power issue related.

I wrote a few setup tips (for the 14mz). You can download the pdf here: http://www.skynetlabs.org/diversos/switchglo.pdf

There are 2 versions of the Switchglo, a 6V and an 8V.

I've had them for almost 1 year and have yet to have an issue. Send an email to sales@switchglo.com and Carmen or Joe will assist you.

It sounds to me like you are simply not getting enough power to your Switchglo. Try connecting it to a 6V battery and I am sure you will get the results you are looking for.

Hi again Mike.

The 6V 8V options are relatively recent (under a year I think). Last year it was something like 4.8V-6V and 6V-7.4V or something like that. It was by the time I bought mines. Since rchelinz mentioned he got it from a friend, we don't know how old the unit is thus it could be one of the old options.

Even though the ones I ordered back then came with only weeks of interval between them, One has a white lacre and the other one a blue tinted one. Never quite understood why they were different.

If he hooks up a 6V pack to it and it works, he will have his answer.

Thanks for the info, I don't have a 6v batt but I'll see what I can throw together maybe to try it, Mine is filled with blue resin on the underside if that means anything.
