Hey guys,

I can do this perfectly on the sim, zero problems at all. The thing is I can't make the connection from sim time to actual stick time yet. Do you know what I mean. I'm calm, cool, and in control on the sim, but in real life I'm so nervous I'm pushing my thumb through the right stick.

I tried doing another 360 spin and the heli went all over the place, it really had me worried. On the sim I can spin it left/right all day long and it doesn't do anything unusal, just spins around...

Is the a time when the sim practice will really feel like real practice, and when I get to the field I'll be comfortable?

The tips you guys have given me have definitely helped out, esp the "move the stick in the direction it's moving." That one really helped me lock in nose in on the sim, and think it will work in real life when I get the nerve up to doing it.

BTW, Bigdog, are you flying your 600EP more now that 30% is going up and getting a bit scarce?

Pete, I think you're right, I should go back to some lazy 8's and work up to flying towards myself.

I just finished what you are going though. It two about 5days or about
12 tanks of fuel to realize or getover Nose In hovering.

Now or the way I did it is the high method. Go about fifty feet tail in or even at an angle and piro around half for about 2 seconds recover if need be and do again for about 4 seconds and fly some 11 and go back to it! I am still kicking myself for how easy it really is
But you will recover it if you get in trouble instincts take over
and that is when you confidence takes over because i was always
afraid that i would not recover it in time but i did and it is a
rush when you do it but when it was over you are ready filling your tank and doing it again and geting better and better at it.

Hey I know the feeling. I've gone through 8 or 10 tanks, each time saying to myself, "this is it, I'm nosing in on the next tank!" and I'm wasting fuel. I know I can do it so I'm just going to do it.

I took a lesson just to get the guts to nose in and did it just fine. I was on a buddy box and he kept control of the tail. When he told me it was time to nose in and was going to spin the tail around I panicked told him "NO, I'M NOT READY!!!" but he spun it around anyway.

Take a guess what happened? Uh, nuttin! I controlled it perfectly and provided all the correct inputs without a hitch, without even thinking about it. It scared the sh*t out of me, but I did it.

I know I can do the same with my heli and will just have to do it and get it over with. You're right, I'll probably be fine with my escape move if I need it. Thanks for your vote of confidence!

Nose-in or crash!

I went to the field saying this to myself yesterday. I was fed up. I told everyone to watch for either a nose-in or a $400 crash, because either way I was going to spin it around.

Well, I DID IT! 5 times on one tank, just as many on the next, I'm lovin' it guys. Wow, what a feeling!

Thanks again to all of you that took to the time and trouble to provide me with the tips an mindset I needed, because they worked! YES!

Ok, I'm a little over excited, but I can't help it. I made the heli my b*tch and finally took, control.

Wow, this is way too cool, I'm almost in the same boat as Helisonmy mind. This is all welcome and great advice for me as well. I seem to be able to nose in on my sim but it's a real cheap sim E-Sky. Anyway , thanks to all and to Helisonmymind for asking the question I was afraid to.

i feel the same way! ive been flying for around 5 months. im down to figure eights, lots of FFF, ect.... i started playing around with doing fast piros lately, i get it out 30-40 yards, about 40 feet up and bang the stick, the bird piro's around super fast, the thing is when i center the rudder, i never know where its gonna stop! last night i had it stop nose in.... instinct took over and i saved it twice. last week the first time this happened, i dumped it, my thumbs just went retarded.....;-)

i found that i am slowly dealing with nose in, itll click, im not rushing it, just having fun! i really need to find the time for sim time.

You're doing figure eights but don't know how to fly nose in?? My first FF's were flying it straight out about 50 feet, turning it around and bringing it back nose in and landing it while still nose in. I was doing that three months before I got up the nerve to try figure eights.

Way, I think this is a skill that reflects your plank experience.

If one does not have that background, the 8's might be easier than doing that.

Nose in was the hardest for me to learn.
The first time went ok,the second time I crashed my Rap 30.
I had the best luck flying away from myself to my right and behind myself(if that makes since)then turning back and flying to my right back the way I came.
Little by little I would work till I was coming back for awhile nose in.
At first I was standing facing away from the heli looking over my right shouler as it was coming back but little by little I would turn untill I was facing the same direction as the heli was coming.
This way If I got a liittle confused I could turn away from the heli and the sticks were back normal.
I hope this makes since,I just can,t think of a better way of saying it.
I could fly nose in on the sim perfect but its a different world outside.
Having the same problem now with inverted,easy on the sim but can,t seem to get the nerve to flip it over,
Going to have to just say what the he-- and try it.
Hope this helps,stay at it you.ll get it.
When I first stated flying I thought I would be the first person in history not to be able to learn to fly helis!

i have not landed or taken off nose in but i have hovered up in the air a bit so i have time to recover if i need it. when i get to close to the ground i tend to panic a little faster than needed. what finally made sence of it for me was to fly the muffler and the nose of the heli. i told my self muffler up, muffler down. nose up, nose down. i bassicly re-tought my self the stick movements corasponding to those movements of the heli. i no longer think of the heli as being backwards. i now think of what comand i need to give to correct any unwanted movment. i tryed the move the stick the way the heli is going but then in my mind it was still backwards and then when i went tail in i was still moving the stick the way the heli was going and that was no good.

I never attempted learning anything like prop up this side or fly the muffler or whatever.
This just didn,t work for me.
I just kept trying untill it came natural without thinking anything.
Now nose in is just another aspect of flight.

You are a master at tail in hovering, right? How did you become that master?... you did it allot. Now it is time to change the routine a little. Here is how:

While 50' high and hovering tail in, piro the heli 180 degrees to nose in and hold it for one second, then piro back to tail in, and stabilize. While you are practicing this, you're 2nd goal is to remain as stationary as possible.

What I want you to do is gradually lengthen the number of seconds to hold nose in while do perform this 180 piro. The piro can be slow or fast, but the important part of this whole practice is two fold: getting used to actually seeing the heli nose in, and feeling more comfortable controlling the tail.

If you get in trouble you know all you have to do is piro 180 back to tail in and you will return to the same comfortable position. Some people take longer as becoming proficient at a given maneuver. Do this as long as it takes, and really try. Intentionally think while you are flying. Talk out loud what you are trying to do, and then do it. Call the maneuver before you do it. You've got to see the heli in the resulting position before it gets there. Otherwise you are just moving the sticks aimlessly.

There is a more detailed logical method I taught myself learning to sustain the nose in maneuver, but figure I would lay down a simplified version. I recommend doing the same technique for sideways hovering left and right. Best of luck, and have fun!

Nose in

I had retreated to my training gear(hula hoop) again for nose in 2 weeks ago. IT worked in that my confidence was raised enough to try it. Well, last weekend I had to remove the hoop due to vibration so I was back to square one. However, I knew I could do it because I did nose in with the training gear and with Realflight so I just flipped my Evo into nose in yesterday. Eight flights with nose in this weekend with no issues. Even moved left/right, forward/back and landed once nose in. I learned if I think less and just "react" I am better off. I will keep practicing nose as much as possible on the sim and at the field. Good luck to other trying to conquer nose in hovering.

I've just reecently done the same thing as rightflyer. I can hover nose in on the Realflight, no problem. Just don't have the confidence with my PAntera or Raptor. I've spent about 1 tank on the Raptor and 2 tanks on the Pantera with the training gear. Just trying to get over the shaky knee's. I find lift off and landing nose is easier than turing in the air.
I think next time at the field, I'll just go for it. Thats why they make parts!

i did what damper did. first i did nothing but nose in on the sim for 3 days. probably 4 hours worth of constant nose in. boring yes but a major help. went out and got the heli 40 feet up and spun her around. did this through 5 batteries and i'm pretty comfy nose in now. just one of those mental blocks i think.lovin it.

I agree nose in is more mental than anything-especially when you practice on the sim enough hours. The first time I flipped it around with the training gear, I tried to think too much. After I let instinct take over, I was fine. (The many hours of sim practice didn't hurt either)

I am working on nose in inveted hovers and share your jitters.
Practice is the key, and a bail out is always a good thing to have up your thumbs.

besides getting her up high, what helped is the mental encouragement i gave myself that if it gets squirly just bail out. i had slowed my tail rate down a bit because the 450 i have piro's so fast it's a blur. after slowing her down it's an easy bail out. i flew nose in so much on the sim i didn't know if i could fly tail in again. but it's like riding a bike. once you overcome one obstacle it's on to the next. lots of practice in between of course. i love this hobby.
