Ace, I was using plastic but only to see how accurate the 3 jaw chuck was, after reading up about the chucks on the net I found that even the most expensive 3 jaw chucks will sill be out by 003 to 005 but a simple way to center your stock is to use paper between the offending jaw and the stock, a trial run today proved that to be correct, using a dial gauge a bit of paper soon had the stock true center.

Using the compound and cross slide
I still don’t see how I will get it good enough, turning 2 dials at the same time sound a bit hit and miss to me.

you dont turn two dials at the same time, the compound rest is set to the angle you want by dial indicating the old part to get the proper angle set, then just cut with the compound rest

it is the same with cutting outside angles

Just "drill" a hole in the fan to the inner diameter - insert the tool to the depth of the taper - and the job is done.

What holds concentricity? What makes the reamer exactly perpendicular to the fan? Have you indicated the mounted fan after you did this. The right person knowing what to look for may be successful with this method but usually not.

The expression goes, "is the machine on the bum or is it the bum on the machine."

A four jaw chuck is the proper way to do it but are you going to invest in a four jaw just to machine a couple fans? Indicating is a learned skill. The average layman will destroy the indicator before he gets a single piece indicated. With a three jaw you will have to shim. Indicate the face first and then indicate for concentricity.

You don't have to indicate to make the gage if you are turning with a single point tool. A single point tool cuts concentric with the axis of the lathe. Normally you cut the outside diameter of a piece while it is still in the chuck so both the id and od run perfect.

He is not going to get this indicator in the tapered bore of the pulley or fan.

when you have limited equipment you have to take the slow and sure way of doing things. Make the gage. When the gage fits perfect the compound is perfect.

I have a 6" four jaw that also came with the lathe but it's a work of art setting it up

If your finished item is 1-1/4 OD and your stock is 1-1/4 what else can you do but indicate.

What makes you think a machinest is not an artist? If you have the four jaw use it. The more you use it the faster you will be indicating with it. Learning takes time.

I have to chance to buy a second hand Zenoah crank very cheap just for using the taper for measuring and testing the hub but the seller isn’t sure if it’s of the 231 or the early 23, will the taper be the same on the old and new engines.

The taper can be slightly different from different lots of the same model. Making a gage that is fitted to the crank that you will use if fool proof. Once the gage is made 95% of the work is done for fine tuning to the next crank. And you have something that can check which way the discrepancy is if there is a discrepancy.

What ever was mounted to that crank got loose and spun on the taper. Not a good master in my opinion except for ruffing.

First attempt

I had a go at setting the lathe up for a taper and then used a felt pen to indicate the contact area, I've clearly got it wrong the first time but I will keep trying untill I get it right.

I think your master is off that's why you are getting rings. I would say you are close.

I tried the ink idea on a few fans first, 3 Raptor 90 fans 2 of witch I did myself (not on a Lathe) and one from another source, they all showed scrubbing at one end of the crank, I then tried it with the Hub that came with the Zenoah 20cc and that scrubbed the ink over the entire taper.

Fixit, How did you ever make out with your taper?

Well I did the trial run as you will have seen but I'm still trying to make my mind up on what clutch and fan to use with the 600 Mk2,
The 90 clutch and predator hub and fan work very well but it's very pricy in the UK so I'm looking for an alternative.
When I've done that I will be making a hub to fit and machining the taper.
I was pleased with how the first taper turned out after receiving guidance on RR and I'm confidant the next will be bang on.

I've also been busy fitting a new quick change tool block and milling head to my lathe just to make it more useful.

First Hub

Well this is my first attempt and making a Hub with taper, I've yet to mount it all and test the run out but I'm getting the hang of it now I think.
