Scale Model RC Helicopters > Balancing Blades (5 of the suckers)

They are of course on a 5 blade head

Cause its hard to buy a set of 5 blades I took a punt and got 3 sets from Heliproz (their 550mm G5's) opened the first set and they weights were 109gm and 108.9gm, second set 108.6 and 108.7 - all good so far

The third set was 104.5 and 104.3

So I've got to add 4.5 gm to one of the blades which is a lot doing it with tape

Any ideas
Cheers
Joe

If it were me, I would e-mail Heliproz and tell them what your doing. See you can exchange the lite set.

I asked them when I ordered them to try and find 3 matched sets
It must have been too hard
Problem with sending them back is I'm in Oz and they are not

I can see were your from now! Are the blades going on a scale? If it is or isn't I'd go post on scale. I'm sure they have that problem often.
Good Luck!

Use Koll Balancer on all

I would use a Koll balancer and make all 5 weight teh same and also CG the same. Just because they are close in weight does not mean they will balance one set to another becasue they may not weigh the same in the same places. Static balance and dynamic balance when spinning can be drastically different causing vibration in a 5 blade config, you would be OK in an even # config but not in a odd # config. What I have done is use small finishing nails drilled and glued chord wise put in on the leading edge toward the trailing edge of the blade at the CG point, tip, or root depending on what the blade needs to both weigh the same and balance the same which using the Koll Balancer coupled with a good gram scale makes possible with minimal effort. I use like 3/4 to 1" long small finishing nails or brads depending on teh chord of the blade, trying to keep teh weight mostly on the leading edge of the blade. If you really want to get perfect you can also try to balance them chord wise with the Koll which helps them all lead/lag the same in flight, again puttting teh weight were needed more to the leading edge or trailing edge depending on what is seen on the Koll and what the blades are made out of. Hollow CF ones being with foam core use a sharpe drill bit and a foam compatible glue, fiberglass use epoxy or ca, same with wood. When you have a set that is close to perfect they sing and run glass smooth. I also check the run out of the main shaft and also put the head on and check were each blade bolt is running with a dial indicator, some heads are horrible making even a perfect set of blades vibrate others are bang on within .001" and are ruined by porrly balanced blades, good balance saves bearings, airframes, servos, etc, and mostly your nerves as there is nothing like a glass smooth scale ship.

Joe, How I balance my blades is to find and mark on the bottom of the blade center cord and length wise all blades. Then find the heaviest blade and match all of the other blades to it. Using double sided tape I use shot for a 12 gauge shot shell and add it to the tape till I get the right balance. After I get all the blades done that way I drill a hole in the bottom of the blade matching the amount of shot then mixing the shot with epoxy put in hole with a little extra epoxy on top, after it sets up I just sand down to the shape of the blade. This way I don't have to use a lot of tape to balance the blades. I also use a Schluter single blade balancer to do this because I can lock the setting to the heavy blade....Jack.

Blade Balancing

joeb56, I go the Find the heaviest blade, and match the rest to it, I find the CofG, drill a hole in the underside and inject silicon, until the blade is balanced
This for some reason does not always work,( in one of the post )
OF blades come with instructions to put the 2 blades of the same weight oposite each other, and for some reason on their 4 blade head this works
I then mount the blades on a custon made balancer, until I can stop any blade anywhere and it will stop there
At the end of the day the only way you will be absolutly sure is down at the flying field, keep moveing the blades into different blade holders until you get the best, then final balance with electrical tape

So..

Joeb,

is this for the revised Lightning head? How did the re-development go? Any news, or is this exercise going to help you determine how the redevelopment went?

I was watching your previous posts and have been watching for an update.

Regards

i used blades from a hawk sport on my sea king, thats two and a half pairs of blades. this isnt a very hard task, simply find the heaviest blade, then match the rest to them. how do you find the heaviest blade? process of elimination. i use a regular balancer (though the koll is top notch) put two blades on, then keep the heaviest blade and mount the next. the toughest thing is if you have a blade that requires a ton of weight to match the weight of that heaviest blade. other than that, its not really a tough process.
