Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Anyone snap the front canopy standoff stud on Stratus with OS 91 SZ?

I've broken it twice already and it is a pain to remove/replace.
I believe it is caused by the OS 91 SZ vibration.

It is somewhat similar to tail boom screw snapping off on Raptor 90SE. I am thinking about retapping it for a 4mm.

After a flight, if the canopy wobbles, it is either lost thumb screw or snapped stud. If you see a missing thumb screw, luck was on your side.
But, if you see all 4 thumb screws intact, curses!!

Funky put some blue loctite on the thumbscrew threads and let it dry then install the thumbscrews they won't come out then .

That works? Great idea, I've lost 2 on my Spectra, luckily the first one I was hovering right in front of myself and saw it come off, so I was able to get it, the second time I wasn't as lucky.

Yep, that is a good tip. I started using blue locktite on them after I lost the first set. Unfortunately I still occasionally forget to tighten them all of the way down before flying and that is when I still lose them

So, I take it that no one snapped the stud that mounts the canopy standoff to the frame then. I do use blue locktite on the thumb screw. When the canopy is flapping with the thumb screw, you can bet that the standoff is stuck to the canopy but not to the frame.

Are you guys using 4 thumbscrews to hold your canopies or 2 thumbscrews and 2 standoffs?

Does anyone make the canopy mount (with bullet at the end) for the stratus standoff size? That would be another option.

I've had this happen a couple of times. The first time I had some bad vibes that I tracked down and fixed. The second time my new canopy was riding the frame.

For my front mounts I am just using some threaded rods with thin tubing around them. They fit pretty snug inside the grommets and I haven't had the canopy come off of them in flight.

Here is a pic (I haven't installed the front grommets on this canopy yet)

Check that you're fan is balanced and still aligned. I haven't had that stand off break nor have any of my buddys.

As far as the thumb screws go, I think I've lost about 6 now. I finally just used loctite as well and it works like a charm.

I have never snapped off the canopy standoff nor have lost a thumbscrew

With the thumbscrew, take a 2.5mm allen wrench and tighten it just a little bit, It shouldn't fall out

The only things my canopy eats are the rubber grommets Get a pack of Radio shack ones, they come in assorted packs of 31 and 7 are the right size...so I have about 20 spare grommets

red... if your snapping the threaded rod that goes into the frame spacer in between the front canopy mounts, its def bc of the SZ vibration. If you havent done this already, pull that frame spacer out from in between the canopy mounts and just use normal 3x8 or 3x10 bolts from the inside to thread the canopy mounts on. use red loctite on the bolts and you shouldnt have an issue. that spacer isnt necessary up there anyway since there is already so much support in that area. if you use a good grade bolt instead it should never snap.

Bison:

I know it is the SZ vibration. Fan balanced and dialed. There was an odd play on the grip. I pulled out the grips and measured the spindle lengths to the c clip recess. One side was 0.7mm longer. This was the cause of the vertical fin vibration. I had it ground down to equal lengths. I still have that vibration but not as much.

As for the spacer, it helps to relieve the stress around the frame during crash. If the spacer is not used, it is possible to mangle the frame around the hole during impact. I opted to drill out the spacer and the standoff to 8-32 (close to 4mm) and used 8-32 studs to hold it down.

I will let you know if it holds up.

Just recently I've had problems with my sz's vibe probs. I've had the fron canapy stand offs come off several times. I was always suprised to find when taking off my canapy that the stand off had come loose. Thanks for the idea BisonFlyer, I'm going to go home and do that tonight. I'm pretty close to going to ys though, I'm tired of having stuff fall off of the heli. Hopefully the new os engine wont have the vibe problems that this one does.

after seeing the new HZ fly quite a few times now, it seems to be very smooth (and the power is unreal). i am running a c-spec now bc i never wanted to deal with the vibe problems of the SZ. i am waiting on the new HZ which i hear is coming very soon. hopefully before ircha.

I prob. wont have the money for an hz until ircha (I'm planning on being there the whole week). So I'm just going to try and pick one up there and drop it in and fly the heck out of it.
