I was just wondering if there are any funflies that guys have went to this year that might be impoundings spread spectrum type radios and if so how big event was it? I know they did not do it at IRCHA last year and I think it worked out ok. Thanks for your impute everyone.

The only problem I've seen is flight line hogging. IMHO, there should be a 1 tank for nitro, or two packs for electric limit when there's a line to fly. The Impound system worked well for limiting flight line hogging to an extent.

There was one fun fly I went to where they impounded spektrum, only because they didn't want other people being afraid that there were transmitters sitting out.

We were doing it this year at the spring Charmouth event in the UK, but it was nothing to do with frequency control. It was purely to limit the number of models in the air at any one time to a maximum of ten - otherwise the airspace just gets too crowded!

At the Autumn event, we're going to try doing it differently - using flight stations, as is done in the US I believe. Hopefully this will also reduce the amount of airspace hogging that goes on....

We will still require Txs to be checked by Tx control so that the pilot's insurance can be verified.

(If I remember correctly we had over 90 transmitters checked in)

I appreciate the responds and would still enjoy hearing what others are doing. My opinion is that it is not needed to compound these type of radios.

However I did not know the guys in UK did not use flight stations, otherwise you would overun each other while in the air!

At our event in Houston this year, we did not impound any 2.4 systems. We did impound the TX's on 72 mhz (only had two people in that range). No issues with interference and we used flight stations to control # of aircraft in flight simultaneously. It worked very well and was far easier to deal with.

No SS impound at the HIROBO CUP

Nice big field, and 10 flight boxes. Impound only for 72mhz. Worked well, no problems. 70+ pilots for 3-day event.

AMA recommends it being impounded due to the older version still out there which maintains-enforces habit for safety reason of course.

But its just a recommendation.

AMA needs to get with the times. Radio impounds should be a thing of the past. When you check in at the funfly and pay your fee that's when they should check you AMA status, and flights should be restricted to 1 flight per turn in the line at a flight station. The flight station line thing can get kinda of annoying but it's not that bad as long as you don't have someone sitting there tuning their gasser for 45 minutes in front of you....

They should limit gasser flight times anyway IMO. In fact ALL flights should be limited to 10 minutes max. 30 sized Nitros can fly for a LONG time too. This is a KILLER at bigger events. As for impound, in NZ 2.4Tx's are not usually impounded but 2.4 pegs are still used to keep people in the habit of putting them on their radio.

Inpounding

Pistol Pete let me understand this I went to AMA field(Muncie)last Aug, with 712 pilots and they did not inpound 2.4(around 450 radios in pits and flight line) radios, line have been going since 93 and it was the smoothest run IRCHA I have been to, hats off to the group of people running IRCHA, they did a great job putting it on last year and I'm sure they will do the same thing this year, as long as you have flight station and you don't let them carry fuel bottles with them I think you will be okay, just my 2 cents worth, thanks. loveraptors:

You have to bear in mind that we are a tiny little island! Even with 10 flight stations along the flightline, they are only going to be about 50 feet apart! Overflying each other is not unusual!

In fact, we split the flightline up. There is a sign saying "No 3D beyond this point", so that sport and scale flyers can have some quiet airspace without the same risk of collision! 3d pilots take their chances ;-)

It makes for an interesting week-end......

With so few 72mhs systems do we even need a impound or just a frequency board?

Now that is an interesting idea spiliting the flight line with scale guys and sports flyers having there own section of the field????

We did not impound radios at the SRC event last year and don't plan on doing it this year either.

I went to an event last month and there was probably only about five 72mhz radios and 3 dozen or more 2.4 systems.

I think all they had was a frequency board not sure if they even had a impound, if so I don't think there was anyone setting there watching it all time.
