Posted this question in the RC lawnmower thread but wanted to create a thread of my own to get some specific answers. I need a new string trimmer. I am sick and tired of having to crank my 20 year old McCullough 20-30 times to get it started and on my 46th pull yesterday (yes, I counted, and I'm sore), the starter rope broke and as any man would, the trimmer had a nice flight of about 20 feet. Needless to say, I am done with it and moving on.

First, let me say that I would love a cordless trimmer (18v or higher) but have heard the batteries (all Nicads) have their issues just as any Nicad does. So that leads me back to good ole 2-cycle gas (4-strokes are too heavy IMO).

I'm looking at Stihl and the Echo 210i. I've got about 1/4 acre to trim. What do you guys suggest between these two or some others I should consider. I do not want a cheap Homelite or Weed Eater brand either that I'll have to replace in 5 years either.

If I thought you weren't my friend...I just don't think I could bear it.

You can't go wrong with an Echo

I have used Echo's for 12 hours a day 5 days a week for 4 years, at least. Never had a failure, they just loose power and can't swing 2 long lines.

I vote for echo.

Stihl has a great product line as well.

I have a Ryobi, have had it for 10+ years. I never have done ANY maintenance on it (never even changed the spark plug)...this thing cranks up every time with no issues. In addition, it's one of those with interchangeable attachments, so it can function as a blower, edger, etc etc.

FWIW.

I recently had to replace my six year old weedeater. I chose this www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=prod...C966&lpage=none
only used it a half dozen times, but so far it seems to be very well built. I like the fact that it came with a heavy brush blade, and can have edger, mini rototiller, or blower attached.

another vote for the echo, I paid about 179 or so for it from Home depot and it has worked flawlessly since day 1

I bought a Troy Built 4 stroke a couple of seasons ago. Easy to start, reliable and best of all NO PRE-MIX, just straight gas. That alone was worth the cost. My prior trimmer was also a TroyBuilt and lasted about 7 years before being stolen...hopefully this one will be just as good.

I have been more than happy with the echo I bought a couple of years ago. Before that I had a much larger John Deere one (rebranded Homelite) and it was heavy and vibrated like crazy. My back would hurt for days after using that thing. I finally broke down and bought the Echo 210 and it weighs much less and runs much smoother. It also seems to have more power than the other one.

I second the goats. They taste better too.

Ok, excellent thread! I'm also in the market, and will follow this thread closely. A brand that hasn't been mentioned yet is Husqvarna. What is every one's thoughts on Husqvarna? Seems like they command a little higher price. Are they worth it?

I own a power equipment co. I have dealt with these things for 12 years now. Get the echo and be done with it. Great reliability, easy to service and work on, very powerful.

I'll add my vote to the echo/stihl crowd. Imo there is no alternative. Stay away from ryobi/homelite and such home depot/sears brands. Maybe 1 in a million actually works out to be half as good as they claim. Also, keep in mind that "if you try being something to everybody, you end up being nothing to nobody". Many of these multi purpose machines do alot of different functions quite poorly and none of it's stated functions actually work very well.

A sheep would be a great replacment for your trimmer. Very reliable, start every time, don't miss one piece of grass or weeds.

another alternative would be a professional Stihl. Goat would be great too.

Damn that ground is hard!

We used husquavarna for some years. Things could cut down a tree.. Always started good and we had several of them, no problems ever. And they where used hard.
