Whoo, okay, interesting project and like you REQUESTED, no further comment on the practicality...

I'd use servos to drive the drills' own speed controllers via the trigger- take off the spring if you can to reduce servo load, and the 148's should be fine. I don't think you need to change the plugs unless you have the really old "G" plugs, then yes you can just put newer plugs on for the 6100e receiver.

I think a bigger issue will be the size of the battery needed to propel and steer that thing around the yard for a reasonable time at the speed you want. How long does it take to just mow the yard now walking behind the mower? I guess a big lipo or A123 pack would be feasible, but not cheap. Hmmm how can you measure the effort to propel the mower, at a projected (guesstimate) weight- push it through a scale with some ballast to represent the battery/propulsion system weight? Then convert to power and time to mow the yard, and see how much battery you need.

What about propelling it with a weed-wacker motor (gas) and steering via the front wheels?

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

Shazaaaam!

That looks pretty good- I like the crawler version, I wonder how fast we could get that to go

Derek, Stihl or Echo are both good brands.

I use all Stihl equipment myself simply due to the location of the dealer. I have had Echo equipment before as well, and still use a couple that I still have. Both brands run like clockwork with very little maintenance, and we use them a LOT.

Do yourself a favor and spend the $ on a commercial grade trimmer(Stihl and Echo both make homeowner-grade trimmers as well, but they're cheaper and a little less durable). For you with weekly use, it will last forever. I decent commercial grade trimmer from either one of those manufacturers is going to be about 300-350 bucks but they're worth the money.

If you don't wish to spend that kind of $ on a trimmer, the homeowner-grade Echo or Stihl will still outlast the other homeowner grade garbage like what you find at Sears or Home Depot.

If you already have a mower, then use this idea^. If you are going to buy a mower, why not get a self propelled? Then just worry about steering.
I liked the idea of putting a small camera on it too. Not only would it be useful to see the lines, fences and other obstacles, but you could run the feed inside to your computer. Then you can sit in air conditioned comfort while you mow!
This is a great idea. Whether it's feasible or not, every guy would love to have one!Have fun.

Just don't forget to post the video when the receiver battery craps out and the mower takes out its angst on your neighbors cat.

Maybe a safety mechanism of sorts should be taken into consideration as well
