I wasn't able to make it when it started friday, got there around 1pm on Saturday due to having to complete my setup, long story there...another post maybe.

VERY fun!! I will definately be there bright and shiney tomorrow.

Lots of cool people there, MANY great flyers. Will bring my video camera tomorrow and get em posted.

Saw Todd Bennet<sp?> flying. Talk about graceful, but yet very explosive. He is VERY precise. That ship was flying as though it was wired guided on rails. Very nice flying!

One other thing, the whole "Oh no, nitro shortage!! For what ever are we to do?!?!"(at this point you clasp your hands to the sides of your face with a shocked/panic look) fuel thing......have no fear. Buzz and his friends at Magnum fuel have THE ticket!!!

I couldn't get Buzz to really tell me what was in the stuff, how much nitro or if it even had nitro at all. Has a bit sweeter stronger smell to the fuel and the smoke as well. Tuning was very easy. I am running a YS50st w/Hatori pipe. Had to make my low end a bit fatter and fatten up the high end a bit, this could also have been what I needed to do with the 30% I had brought with me today.

Right away when I had the engine idling you could easily hear it running MUCH smoother. When testing throttle response with bumps on the collective (starting at idle and stopping at idle while firmly hodling the head) the response was VERY crisp and 'RIGHT NOW!'. I was pretty happy with this as it seemed to be an improvement on the 30%. Not a HUGE difference, but definately noticable.

Took my ship up and tossed it around a bit, few rainbows, few tic tocs, etc. I wasn't really pushing it too hard as I was still getting my setup tweaked, brand new ship and all. Anyhow, I had flown 4 tanks previously today so I was pretty familiar with how my ship was 'feeling' today. Right away I could feel more power. Believe it or not, but it's definately there! I couldn't believe it. I had heard Magnum was working on some new blend, but I didn't think they were going to get to the same power of 30%, figured they'd get close, but not the same. Needless to say I am very impressed!! Wasn't like a dramatic, 'whoa!!! This feels like a 90!' kind of jump, but I was now able to do full power climb outs inverted and upright, tic tocs and funnels and my headspeed stayed solid.

This fuel also responded MUCH better to needle adjustments than the 30%.

There was an issue with the engine suddenly quitting when returned to idle after it built up temp. This was fixed by slightly raising the top element in the glowplug. After 'modding' the glowplug all was well.

By the way, this is in no way a marketing pitch for Magnum, this is just my feedback on the funfly so far. I am just giving props to the folks at Magnum Fuels for taking this "Nitro Shortage" as a kick in the pants to make a possibly better and lower cost fuel instead of "Just jack up the price!". This fuel costs the same as 30% BEFORE the "shortage".

What was really funny about the whole thing was how he got me hooked! Just like a drug dealer, lol! I saw him, had wanted to meet him for a while so I introduced myself. Mentioned to him that I heard he was working on a new blend, asked if I could buy a gallon to "test" it for him. He laughed and pointed to the gallon with the handcrank on it and said go ahead and fill up a tank! I burned the first one, asked for a second and got it. Next thing you knew I was walking away with 2 gallons in my hands, lol!

After running those 2 tanks, I can honestly say I did not want to go back to the 30% I had brought. I pumped my tank full with 30%, sat there thinking and staring at it and kept coming back to, 'I really don't want to feel it boggy again, this sucks!'. Thanks Buzz!!

Met a bunch of folks and had a great time flying. I actually witnessed my first 'in person' boom strike. I gotta say, I think it should be spelled BOOOOM strike! Cause man, the raining cloud of debris was huge. Very sorry to whome ever that was, ouch! LOTS of great, hard 3D flying going on. Very fun to watch!

Anyhow, was VERY fun today!! I wish I could have stayed to watch the night flying, had to get home to give my kitty his insulin shot.

See you guys at the field tomrrow!!

I would have liked to go to this one, but not good timing. Buzz does have a good thing...no need to worry about the nitro "shortage" with that!!

Buz has an extremely loyal following in the Pattern community. So he must know what he is doing.

I had a talk with Buzz on the phone afew days ago (what a character) and he was telling me about this stuff. Very hush hush! But he did mention the possible need to use a modified glow plugs in fact he said he was/had developed new plugs that would be for sale. Did anybody need/get to use these? We ordered 40 gal of 30% from him about 2 months ago and would like to order another 40.

Thanks so much to the coordinators of the Funfly event this last weekend!!! Was LOADS of fun!!!

Didn't end up getting footage of Todd Bennett or Matt Bonos flying, they had to leave Saturday night. Hope to see you guys back again next year!!!

What fun it was, I am still on cloud 9. End of the afternoon on Sunday I decided to do something crazy. I figured that the folks there hadn't seen it at all over the 3 days. So I performed a blade scrape, hehehe. Yea, took a little meat off my G5's, but heck....knowing that I made folks freak out a bit was worth it, lol! Had attempted to do it a bit earlier in the flight, but the wind kept gusting which was making my heli balloon and drop. Didn't think it would make a good blade scrape then. Was about to give up when I was 2/3 through my tank. Brought it in for another attempt, had it inverted at about a foot. The wind was still gusting and I was about ready to just punch out and forget about it. Then suddenly the wind died, so I brought her down to about 2 inches off the ground, held it there and snapped some cyclic into it. Heard the blades swiping the runway and saw big puff of white dust leap up and then punched it back out. Went into more tic toc's and rainbows then autoed it back in. Was very very fun.

Last flight of the day ended in a lock out. Dunno how that happened, supposedly I was the only one on channel 42, so I am still trying to track down the cause. Control came back just after it had rolled over to die. So I gently coaxed it back over and fed in collective to soften the 'landing'. Ended up only bending the flybar, so I got away very lucky.

Ended up burning a gallon of Buzz's new fuel. I have to say I am very pleased with the performance. To me that is saying a lot, because I am a huge performance junky. Nothing irks me more than having to loose performance in any way. There was definately none of that. In fact, there was a performance increase. Looking forward to trying out Buzz's new glow plugs when they become available. But after doing the suggested mod to my glow plug, I did not experience any issues.

Anyhow, I am at work right now so I should cut this short. I just wanted to say I had a whole lot of fun and will definately be back there next year. The event coordinators did a fantastic job and deserve a huge pat on the back for a very fun and well run event!

Thank you!

I had a great time as well. If anybody has a set of tail blades that they need cut down I will be happy to do it. Same goes with main blades.

Dirthead,

Hehehe, yea I had a blast. Was worth chewing my blades up for that. Actually, I think a little epoxy to reseal the tips would probably work just fine. Heck, I went back into mild 3D after the scrape and didn't notice any funkyness.

Think I'll have to make sure and have a 'spare' set on hand to do another scrape at the Crosswinds funfly, we'll see.

held it there and snapped some cyclic into it

That was a bit scary to watch, actually. I don't think "snapping some cyclic into it" is something you'd want to try again. I've never seen an intentional blade scrape with the disc at like 15 degrees to the pavement. Lucky, sure, but it was fun to watch

maybe I'll bring some beater blades to the crosswinds funfly and you and I can put on a synchronized blade scraping demo

Eric_b,

Are you suggesting that instead of using cyclic to scrape the blades I should have just lowered it using collective? By using cyclic input to get the blades to strike meant that only the blade tips were going to make contact. Also, I think my phrasing of "snapping cyclic into it" was a bit strong, more correctly would be that I fed in enough cyclic to get the scrape.

I'll bring a set of beater blades to Crosswinds as well and we can do a duet blade scrape, lol! Should be interesting.

Well I have two sets of beaters, one NHP miss-matched set and one set of MAH's that I patched a crack in. lol.

Just need to balance the sets out and they're good for scraping!

Yep, although I am a but wary of blade scrapes with that pretty head. It's has all of the shiny bits, and I like shiny things.

Hehehe, I feel the same way about my 600. To be honest, that was the first time I went through with the thought of trying a blade scrape, lol. Cutting grass I will do any time, blade scrapes are definately hairy.

If I feel nutty and crazy again, I may try it again. Would be cool though to see formation blade destruction, lol.
