e-Electric General Discussion > Power Supply for Hyperion Duo. Using a PC Power Supply. Calling all electronics experts.

I have converted a few computer power supplies for in house 12volt power source. I recently purchased a Hyperion Duo Charge. The Hyperion trips the power supply overload function as soon as it starts charging. The power supply is a 630 watt, 28 amp power supply. Needless to say it has plenty of power.

I believe it is the sudden draw of current from the Duo that tripps the overload circuitry. The power supply sees this as a short and shuts itself down. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?

Does anyone know how to bypass or increase a computer power supply overload circuitry?

Sorry but your numbers do not add up! A 12v at 630w = 52a. Also 630w for a PC Seems "large".You do not specify "what" you are charging? The duo is adjustable for less than 40a supplies. More info

I am using an Alinco 34amp power supply with my Hyperion, charging 2 packs at 3.7 amps each with no issues at all.
I also have a PC supply that was upgraded to 34 amps, haven't tried it with the Hyperion yet, but did use it with two TP1010's with no issues. Here is a link for converting PC power supplies. One thing I did notice with my PC power supply, if I tried to hook up the chargers to it AFTER the power supply was turned on, it would kick out. If I had the chargers already hooked up before powering up, no issues. Has something to do with the type of initial amperage draw that PC's have.

Get a real power supply and be done with it.

I use Astron, Alinco, and MFJ. These are all purpose built power supplies designed to power expensive amateur radio equipment.

I work for a switch mode psu manufacturer in the test/repair dept and I would also say the same thing .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

agree...these PC power supply conversion were not meant for todays chargers and lipos as it was more for low charging of Nic and Nimh and for the hobbyist with a bread board and components for tweaking and experimenting with low amperage.

Be careful ask around before purchasing I have been told 12v power supplies "can" have a lot ripple in them causing problems with electronic chargers. I have one from MFJ sorry no link but google will bring it up. It is about double the other one but it is used by ham guys so it is fairly clean.

PS I missed previous poster said his worked great

a 630W power supply won't be supplying a full 52A on it's 12V rail. Look at the sticker on the side to see the real 12V rail current ability.
