I sincerely hope this news story doesn't bring your thread down, but since it was a Cherokee and it happened a couple days ago about 30 miles WNW of Las Vegas, I've posted it. Clearly this was pilot error -- flying too low and slow for the conditions and terrain.

The pilot got himself boxed in while trying to climb up and over Mt Charleston (heading back to California), then clipped a tree and some power lines and went in, killing all 4 aboard. According to my maps he impacted at 7700', with 2 miles (30 secs) to go to clear 11000'. Knowledgeable witnesses heard the plane at full power before impact, so it's unlikely it was a mechanical issue.

Be careful up there everyone.

People ask me when I fly them why I try to get as much distance from the ground as I can. Especially when canyon flying in Utah...

Here is the answer.

With the temperatures where they are, he was probably at gross and did not compensate for the Density Altitude. No more than 90% of gross now is probably a higher than optimal limit.

4 people and fuel is a bit much.

Sad.

Keep up the good work jjeaster!!

Wait..what!?!?! No, that can't be!

And looking at the weather at the time, winds on the mountain were SE at 10 gusting 20 -- a tailwind on top of everything else. A bad mix of unfortunate circumstances -- but an avoidable accident any way you add it up. Seven children were orphaned from this one accident.

that is just awful.. i guess we will never know what happen in the pilots eyes but it does seem to have been a weight issue.

I learned to fly at an airport in Minden Nevada (MEV), at 4700'.
I also flew out of So. Lake Tahoe (TVL) at 6200'.
The DA at these airports was usually 7000-1000' durring the summer.
I always kept a KOCH chart near by to review the performance loss.

The PA-28/181 I was flying would only climb at about 150FPM with 2 adults and fuel to the tabs.
