Just wanted to get a flight in this morning and all of sudden i heard and knocking noise on the heli... brought it back in and sure enough the main gear stripped... only can think that the start shaft bearing block shifted away from the main gear... is the start shaft bearing block the only thing to adjust gear mesh between the pinion gear and main gear... looks like they are the only holes that are elongated

Was it actually stripped or was it grinded down? It would imagine that it would be pretty dam hard to actually shear the teeth off of the main gear.

Get a life? How the hell do you fly a life?

There isn't enough adjustment to back the engine/drive gear away from the main gear far enough to strip the main gear. Maybe if the engine and the bearing block came completely loose it would. Sounds like a heavy load or something briefly bound up long enough to rip those gear teeth off. You wouldn't have just stripped 5 teeth off in flight and then continued in for a landing. If the mesh backed up it would have stripped the whole gear and more than likely you would have had not been able to land.
There had to be somekind of shearing action happening to take out the top half of five teeth only. Could be just a bad piece of plastic, could be something else. Did you check the mesh after this happened?

If it was mesh the whole main gear would have been grinded off equally. Either something jammed for a quarter of a second or something fell between the main gear and the pinion... you've still your magnets on the clutchbell?

as i look at the gear again ...it appears as almost all of the teeth are carved out... ..what else would it be other then gear mesh... all of the teeth are damaged but not as bad as the 6 teeth i mentioned
