I've just had 6 'broken' tail servos inspected, these are a mix of Futaba 9251, 9256 and 9254. All had fuel inside the servo case which has caused the servo to fail, or been a contributing factor. Are there easy ways of sealing the servo - where's the oil getting in?

oil gets in where horn get screwed to...or in other words via upper case.

there are some things you can do to make it resistant to fuel damage.

seaplane flyers use the following method...open servo and dunk in corrosionX (.com) as it leaves a water protective film over the electronics...others swear by WD-40 (wd = water displacement)I prefer, use and recommend the X factor.

another method is to apply a large goop of silicon and then close cover...plus add a lubed O ring (mineral oil works)prior to attaching servo arm...downside...potential burn out due to lack of heat dissipation...depending on servo.

im pretty sure someone has made a video and posted in youtube.com search using water proofing servo...or words to that effect.

Got to agree, stick them up front. Todays gyro's and tail servo's are so quick that there is no advantage to having them at the back.

This is out there, but.....

I read a post where a CONDUM was placed over the servo.

I'd rather be flying

Thanks for the replies guys. I will certainly get the forward mounting kit for the Knight 50, however its difficult to move the tail servo forwards in the others. Think I will try the corrosionx and o-ring treatment where it has to stay on the boom.

My 9254 was boom-mounted, and it failed (on the ground, luckily). But not from fuel or oil, as there was not a single droplet inside the case (very clean). I had some scotch tape wrapped around the bottom of the servo, so that probably helped. It was fixed, at my expense (less than a year of use, repair cost around half of a new servo) by Futaba, and I no longer trust it (or any other 9254) enough to use.

For the boom mounted tail servo on the Knight, I really don't care much for the stock mount as it has the servo hanging down too close to the exhaust.

Take a look at the Quick UK tail servo mount for the Raptor 30/50. Tucks it to the opposite side of the boom from the exhaust, on the same level as the boom. Keeps it nice and tidy there for me.
