Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Hyper 50 Piston install?

After replacing the rear bearing in my Hyper 50 I am having trouble getting the piston and sleeve reinstalled. How do you compress the ring enough to get it back into the sleeve. To be honest I cant even get it back in the sleeve out of the motor let alone with the piston in the block. I have rebuilt plenty of non ringed car motors but this is the first ringed motor I have worked on. Any help?

Rob,
shouldn't be too dificult,
the way I do it is put the piston and con rod down from the top of the engine (no liner installed) and attach the big end bearing to the crankshaft.
The piston will now be slapping around in the housing.

Make sure the ring ends are aligned with the the pin on the
piston groove
(might be your problem)
If this is not aligned then the ring will never sit far enough into the piston groove.

With ring in the correct position slowly slide the liner over the
top whilst holding the ring in position with the pin,
because the bottom of the liner is tapered out it should slide in quite easily.
Check the ring and the piston groove locating pin.

Thank you. I didnt realize there was a pin in the ring groove. THAT made it a whole lot easier, lol

Thanks again,
Rob

It keeps the ring from spinning on the piston and scoring the liner and so the gap is away from the ports.

Artamis hit it on the head here. I also use a light oil when sliding the sleve over the piston. Seems to let it go on easier. I broke a couple rings before I found that little pin too. So don't feel to bad. A lot of guys miss that the first time.

Another tip. Make sure your sleeve is clean and free from scaring. You can use a brake hone on it just a bit to clean it up if you need to. But not too much or your compresion will suffer. If you have any "deep" scratches or gouges. Just replace the sleeve.

Good luck,

Viper

Tech Tip of the month: Check all your bearings before you pack it up for winter. Oil = no rust!
