Nitromethane is incredibly useful stuff - model (and racing) fuel is only a tiny fraction of the total use. It's used in things ranging from pharmaceuticals to dry cleaning.
Without nitromethane, a lot of the things we take for granted stop working or go away. Burning the stuff as fuel is the least of the problems with a nitro shortage.
Those "other uses" for nitro will hurt far more people than race fans and modelers -- and provides motivation to have a supply that won't vanish - ie. motivation to keep the US nitro plants running.
