Gasser Model RC Helicopters > 1005/Spectra comparison

Been flying my first gasser alot these days and leaving my Raptor 50 either at home or the back of the van. I have a Hanson 26 on it and is broken in. It runs great. My only complaint is I wished there was a different gear ratio other than 6.43 to 1. I'd like to see something closer to 7 to 1. I can't imagine the original G23 pulling that ratio. No wonder they overheated.
With the 26 Hanson it's a small complaint but would like more torque [[motor in it's 12000/12500 rpm sweetspot]] at a lower headspeed than 1900 to 1950. I run 1850 now.
Wondering from you guys that have flown both the 1005 and Spectra what are the differences in performance. I know the Spectra has different ratios available in the 7 to 1 range. Is it much lighter than the 1005? Better climbouts? Quicker cyclics ?
I won't sell my 1005 [as I like it very much] and would like to add another gasser to my fleet with abit more performance.
Any thoughts would be great..

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly better than I can pilot them

turboomni, You could bump your HS up to 1950 (12,538.5rpm) with out any problems,, I run my Xcell 1005 at those rpm's and even higher when I drag race,,, Are you swing 680 or 690 with the stock boom?? XGM/VGM

GR

For years I've been using a Bergen clutch in mine with a 6.92 GR. Its basically a 13 tooth pinion on the original 90 tooth main. When I first setup my gasser back in the late 90's I spoke with someone in California for advise and he said to get the Bergen clutch/fan system along with a Hanson 23 and I'll be doing good. Well I did and its been great ever since, even though I now run it with a Hanson G26 3D plus motor.

Maybe you can get a 13 tooth pinion for it nowadays from Minair, you should check with Bob there to see if he can mount one on your clutch bell.

With the 6.92GR, I run mine at 1560 normal, 1680 idle up 1 and 1800 idle up 2 and the motor is very happy. I haven't tried faster rotor speeds, probably could, just haven't had the need for my flying style.

Thanks for the replies. Xcell ,I run 700 mm blades on the stock boom with 95mm tailblades. Maybe 690's would be better?

Rbort,,I will check with minair for a 13T pinion.
I will look into/try both solutions. I just tend to freak at the thought of my old gasser swinging 700's at almost the same headspeed as my 50 nitro. Maybe I just gotta get over it and realise it's ok.

You guys have any info on the differences between the 1005 and Spectra? Not the mechanical ones ,I know about those but the feel and performance comparing the two.
Looking for my winter project.
Thanks

The Spectra will feel more connected, as for flight performance, there's not much but maybe the Spectra will out perform the 1005 a little,, Especially with the Tempest head, I'm running a 1005 with all the SE upgrades, including the front servo tray on all my 1005, I have 3 of them... As far as weight,, there pretty close, my 1005 SE Hot Dog heli weights right at 12lbs, ready to fly,,, Hope this helps,, XGM/VGM...

Also,, the 90 guys run 710 at 2000 HS,,, I would bump your up to 1950 and give it a try,, Just to see how you like the difference,, cause there will be some!!!

Just thinking about a past reply to me from you,. Maybe it's the combo of gear ratio and the Zimmereman wrap around muffler on my Hanson 26 that is partially to blame.

I will try a higher head speed though,,,cheapest solution

Yes the Zimmerman wrap around Muffler will restrict the Hanson 260 engine, It will run, but if you change it out,, you will see a differance!!

I would try the higher HS, but watch your temp,, with at muffler restricting exhaust, it could heat up on you,, Just a FYI,, XGM/VGM

Also I saw a post where someone said that Al at Hanson had some Century V-3's in stock,,, There cheap, and from what Raja's says,, they run nice,, I need to order one, and do some testing between the V-3 and Hatori,, which is what I run,, XGM/VGM
