Do you know if the top half of the swash was still free to move up and down? The swash ball may have stuck like MrMel's and the servos pulling the rest of the swash down was enough to pull it apart..?

I see now what might have happened.
The swashplate setup was probably the issue.
The swashplate travel might have been setup too low and the bottom of the swash might have been rubbing against the collar until it ate up its way into the flaring a the bottom of the swashplate.
That might have cut the flaring off making it possible for the swashplate to separate.

I think we're going to have to put a warning on the setup to make sure people don't go too low on the swashplate setup and rub the bottom of the swashplate against the main shaft collar.

Despite that since we don't have a definite answer and because I value the important knowledge we gained from his crash we'll still take care of him

Augusto.

It doesn't look like there are any marks on the top of the collar though. I would think that the top of the collar would be chewed up.

Also, doesn't the flange rotate in unison with the collar? If so, even if they contacted it would only be at one point. Unless, of course, while at full negative pitch you were constantly stirring the cyclic. But again, in that situation I would think you would see marks on the collar.

Normally I don't like to chime in on the Avant section since I fly MA stuff but a $750-$800 crash is nothing for a 90 size heli. I've seen far worse on all sorts of helis from Align to TT and everything in between. In any sort of 90, you can usually expect about $250-300 per crash with $1000+ and sub $50 crashes every once in a while.

Just remember to hit throttle hold well before the heli touches the ground.

Dood... the ring around the mainshaft coller is in fact the bottom of the swash ring (crimp). The swash was set up and all throws were measured and limited, top, btm, ale and ele. I had +12/-12/6/6 on the swash. I don't know exactly what happened to it but it does look to be broken/cracked away from the top of the swash.

I hit throttle hold pretty quick but not before it hit as it was only a few inches off the ground. When I poped negative to climb out it did not respond then dropped to it's death. I hit TH as soon as it hit but I was not expecting that to happen so... maybe half a second or so elapsed.

Augusto... it was greating talking to you on the phone. For anyone interested Augusto will be picking up the tab on this one! Thank you brother! It was not expected but certainly is appreciated!

Thanks for your great support here Augusto. And, I'm not referring to free parts....just the fact that you're looking after Aurora owners is great.

To me, a $700 crash is considered a good day!

Hi Joel,

Like I said on the phone we never had a failure of this type so to us it's very important to get all the parts and information to investigate so we assigned this to the R&D budget so you get the benefit of being one of the guinea pigs this time .

yeah but if you were Align imagine the logistics in trying to figure out if the crash cause was truly machine fault or builder/pilot error? Not to mention the shear number of them out there. Theres a lot of newbies who don't know what they are doin with align helis, that is the majority of their market afterall. At least Augusto can assume a person buying an Aurora has a reasonable idea of what they are doin.
